FINANCE Minister Alexander Chikwanda has launched a K4 million newly constructed National Savings and Credit Bank (NATSAVE) Branch and staff houses in Kazungula District with a call for the business community to take advantage of the financial institution to access funds and create jobs for the locals.

In the few days NATSAVE Kazungula Branch has been operational, a total of K211, 000 has already been mobilised as deposits through the opening of 200 accounts while K70, 000 has been given out as loans.

Mr Chikwanda said he was certain that Kazungula Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) would take advantage of the presence of NATSAVE in Kazungula District to access funds and grow their businesses so that they were able to create jobs through the employment of local people.

He said it was also gratifying to learn that the bank had moved into the district with a microfinance programme targeted at micro entrepreneurs with a focus of boosting and empowering businesses which mainly cover trading, fishing and farming.

Mr Chikwanda was peaking during the official launch of NATSAVE Kazungula Branch yesterday.

“Kazungula is a very unique district both economically and socially, as it borders three countries namely Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

“The centrality of Kazungula among all these countries brings forth various economic opportunities for the district. Therefore, NATSAVE’s opening of the first full-fledged bank in this area is a timely business decision carrying the first mover advantage which will benefit the bank and the people of Kazungula,” Mr Chikwanda said.

Mr Chikwanda said the Government had recognised the economic potential of Kazungula and that was why many developmental projects were currently under construction.

Some of the developmental projects under construction are Kazungula Bridge, District Hospital, 30 housing units, police station, office block for the council, District Commissioner’s office and Post Office.

Mr Chikwanda said the Patriotic Front (PF) was asking for another mandate and overwhelming support for President Edgar Lungu to be at the helm of the nation because the man was epitome of human fellowship.

“President Lungu is not a magician or he will not promise or offer you miracles beyond continuing with PF development agenda which has ushered in transformation,” he said.

He said Zambia was a heaven of peace and unity and hence Zambians should jealously guard such attribute by keeping fanatics at bay.

“Let us allow free flow of ideas. Let us not allow the drama implicit in electoral politics to endanger cleavages that weakens the fabric of our wonderful country.
“Let us categorically refuse to embrace a culture of intolerance as not all of us can be councillor, Member of Parliament or President,” he said.

Bank of Zambia (BOZ) Director for Bank Supervision Gladys Mposha commended NATSAVE for opening a Branch in Kazungula.

Ms Mphosha said the central bank was delighted to note that NATSAVE had continued to extend its footprint across the country.

“The challenge to NATSAVE is to follow up the opening of this Branch with development of products and services that meet both the general and peculiar needs and requirements of Kazungula economy.

“On our part as BOZ, we will continue to support market development by providing an enabling environment for growth in the financial sector as a whole,” Ms Mposha said.

NATSAVE managing director Cephas Chabu said his bank had been well received in the area to provide affordable, appropriate and competitive financial products to boost the domestic economy of kazungula.

NATSAVE Board Vice chairperson Fred Siame said the opening of Kazungula Branch fulfilled the mandate that the Government had given the Bank to promote financial inclusion by taking banking services to all parts of the country especially in rural areas.

Eat more fish, CSO-SUN prods Zambians

The Zambia Civil Society Scaling up Nutrition Alliance has advised Zambians to develop interest in the consumption of fish in order to improve their nutrition levels.

Alliance Head of Advocacy and Communications Eneya Phiri says it is unfortunate that despite Zambia being blessed with abundant fish, people are still not consuming the commodity.

Mr. Phiri said while it was good for people to receive an income from the fish, it was also important for them to spare some for consumption.

He was speaking during a fish consumption awareness event in Siavonga recently.

The CSO-SUN has been between March 24 2016 and April 2 2016 conducting awareness campaigns in Chongwe and Siavonga districts on eating fish, especially small whole dried fish and disseminating information on the different ways to cook and store fish.

The campaigns were supported by SMARTfish through NFDS consultancy.

Mr. Phiri said CSO-SUN was concerned about the levels of malnutrition which he said are exceedingly high.

“It is unfortunate that in spite of being blessed with massive natural resources like Kariba with abundant fish, people in Zambia are still not consuming this precious commodity. In Siavonga, you find that it is one of the main sources of income of the local fishermen. While we are happy that people are receiving an income from the fish, we would very much want to see a situation where they also spare some fish for consumption,” Mr. Phiri said.

“Not everything needs to be sold. We need to spare some fish to feed our homes. It is irresponsible to continue suffering from forms of malnutrition such as micronutrient deficiencies when we have an abundance of fish from which we can access these required nutrients.”

“Current national statistics show stunting (in children under the age of 5) to be at 40 per cent or 1.2 million children, wasting at 6 per cent, and high levels of combination of micronutrient deficiencies, 53 per cent of school-aged children are deficient in vitamin a while 46 per cent have iron deficiency. Recently, obesity rates have also been on the rise and are currently at 23 per cent in women alone,” Mr. Phiri noted.

He said this has severe negative consequences for the people of Zambia and ultimately the economic and political strength of the country will be compromised.

“Stunted children will contribute less to their communities and will eventually earn less as adults. In essence, malnutrition devalues human capital. This is why we have been urging all stakeholders to do what is right to curb malnutrition in Zambia,” he said.

Mr Phiri added, “One way in which we can begin to address malnutrition is to diversify our diets. We have been in Siavonga and Chongwe for the past few days conducting awareness campaigns in the communities on the need for people include fish, particularly small fish or Kapenta, in their diets to improve their nutritional status.”

Mr. Phiri said fish was one of the most nutritious foods that is locally available especially in lake districts such as Siavonga.

He said fish contained several nutrients such as proteins, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins all of which are very good for body and brain development.

Mr. Phiri said fish was especially good for the women, particularly pregnant and breastfeeding women as its benefits directly go to the developing foetus.

“This is why the theme of the campaigns has been rightly named ‘a little fish goes a long way’ because we know the long term benefits of consuming fish. We wish to echo the words of President Edgar Lungu who lamented in August last year that it is criminal for Zambians to import nearly 45,000 tons of fish when we have plenty water bodies from which we can produce and consume our own indigenous fish,” Mr. Phiri said.

He thanked SMARTfish and NFDS consultancy for their support in running the campaigns successfully in Chongwe and Siavonga. We urge all stakeholders to take keen interest in the health and cost benefits of fish so that together we can have healthy, vibrant nation,” said Mr. Phiri.

And Siavonga District Fisheries Officer Mebelo Wamulume said the government was committed to improving the nutrition status of the citizens.

“Young people need to consume fish day in and day out. The government of Zambia is currently repealing the National Nutrition Commission Act to align it with current fish demands.

Currently, we seem to be importing a lot of fish from China and yet we are endowed with vast water bodies which can help us improve the supply of fish within the country and the neighbouring countries,” Mr. Wamulume said.

Meanwhile, Lakeshore Hope and Relief Zambia Programme Officer Twaambo Mufalo said his organization would continue to promote the consumption of fish in Zambia.

Zambia make no gain on FIFA rankings

5

Zambia stays put on the latest FIFA Rankings released in Zurich on Thursday for the month of April.

Chipolopolo stands still at 78th in the World thanks to their modest performance in the 2017 Africa Cup Group E qualifiers in March.

Successive 1-1 home and away draws against Congo-Brazzavile have left Zambia with no gain since falling from 76 in February to 78th last month.

Congo too stay put in 59th place.

However, Group E leaders Guinea Bissau, who host Zambia on June 2 in their penultimate qualifying match, have made a 45 point jump to land at 102 in the World.

This is after they beat Kenya 1-0 home and away in their Group E doubleheader last month.

Kenya are at 115 in the World.

Meanwhile, the top three African countries on the FIFA charts are one Algeria, 2nd is Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana are 3rd.

Senegal are 4th while Egypt is 5th.

Nkana won’t relax-Chiyangi

Nkana coach Aggrey Chiyangi says the FAZ Super Division leaders will strive to ensure that they stay top of the table as the season progresses.

The record 12-time champions on Wednesday opened a five-point lead at the top of the 18-team table after beating Kabwe Warriors 1-0 at Nkana Stadium.

“We knew the game against Warriors was going to be tough and it was tough. Like I said we won’t underrate any team in the league,” Chiyangi said.

Nkana moved to 12 points from four games to maintain their one hundred percent start to the campaign.

“Our overall target is to stay top and to stay top we have to win all our matches. So we are going to work very hard because we know that Nkana is now the team to beat,” he said.

Nkana are now shifting attention to Sunday’s away match against second placed and promoted Lusaka Tigers who sits on seven points after an away 1-1 draw at Green Buffaloes on Wednesday.

“Winning the first four games is very motivating for us,” Chiyangi said.

Police has clarified that the 16 people arrested last night in the Showgrounds area in Lusaka were not performing a sex orgy as it has been alleged.

Some online media reports showed images of the 16 people that were picked up last night by Police from the Showgrounds after they were alleged caught in a sex orgy in offices belonging to Jambo Tracking Ltd around 22 Hours.

Jambo Tracking Ltd is owned by suspended Zambia National Farmers Union Executive Director Ndambo Ndambo and his wife and is the centre of a corruption scandal involving millions of Kwacha at ZNFU.

Reports said security personnel in the showgrounds were alerted by noises of sexual growls and suspected ritual chants and alerted the owner of the premises, who reported the matter to Manda Hill Police.

The entire group was picked up and detained at Manda Hill Police around 2 AM.

Mr Hamoonga said they have all paid admission of guilt and have been released.

MISA issues international alert over Zambian government threat of media regulation

MISA Zambia Chapter says it has received with concern the threats by Chief government Spokesperson Chishemba Kambwili that government will start regulating the media in the country.

MISA Chairperson Hellen Mwale says the remarks are saddening especially that there is already a hostile environment evidenced by the increase in political violence against journalists.

Ms Mwale said if the threats of media regulation came to pass it would simply mean a de facto censorship of the media by a government that purports to be a democracy.

Below is a statement issued by MISA.

MISA issues international alert over Zambian government threat of media regulation

Lusaka, April 6th, 2016-The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chapter has received with concern the remarks by the Chief Government Spokesperson threatening state regulation of the media in Zambia.

The remarks are saddening as there is an already hostile operating environment for the media in Zambia evidenced by the increase in political violence against journalists, legal and other persecution as well as several laws inimical to the freedom of the press.

It is not the first time that the minister has issued this threat of statutory regulation and it is therefore worrying that the threats have continued as this amounts to a call for de facto censorship of the media by a government that purports to be democratic while aiming to silence certain sectors of society that are deemed to carry critical views.

We condemn the threats by the chief government spokesperson and we call on the President to clear the government’s position on media freedom in Zambia especially that the PF government campaigned on a platform of further liberalising the media industry in Zambia.

Minister Kambwili also stated that some media houses are receiving payments from politicians in order to provide favourable coverage for them. We challenge the Minister to immediately furnish the nation with a list of the said media houses and evidence of the amounts of money received if his statement is in really in good faith.

It is also worth noting that the Patriotic Front which is in government today heavily benefited from media coverage in 2011 by specific media houses and not once were there any accusations of the coverage being done in a dubious manner.

The Chief Government Spokesperson should know that the role of the media is not only to offer coverage to the PF or the sitting government but to all the sectors of society whether in support of government or not and this includes other political parties.

It is only in this way that the citizens will be enabled to make informed decisions.
We wish to strongly warn the minister to refrain from further threats against the media as we will not hesitate to use whatever means are at our disposal including legal redress against the minister’s actions and threats.

MISA has since issued an international alert to all cooperating partners, human and media rights organisations as well as multilateral organisations because the continued threats against the media are also an affront to democracy. State regulation of the media is unacceptable in a democratic dispensation and this is why the said threats are very worrying.

May we also state that a self-regulatory mechanism exists through the Zambia Media Ethics Council (ZAMEC) which media houses, organisations and trade unions have been tirelessly working on to ensure its operationalization.

We wish to call on all media houses and journalists to stand as a united force against this continued threat of state regulation of the media by the PF government which promised to provide an environment for media to flourish.

UPND accuse PF of killing one of it’s members

Charles Kakoma
Charles Kakoma

The opposition UPND have accused the ruling PF of beating up and killing Lewis Mwila one of its members in Chilanga.

UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma said Mwila was murdered yesterday for merely mobilizing on behalf of his party.

He said the suspected PF cadres took Mr Mwila to a bush and beat him to his death and later hanged his body to purport that he committed suicide.

He said Mr Mwila had earlier reported threats on his life from members of the PF to the police in the area but the police did not take any action.

Mr Kakoma who condemned the killing said it was hypocrisy for president Lungu to continue paying lip service to the escalating violence being perpetrated by known members of his party instead of taking action to stop the scourge.

Family members and friends of deceased told Muvi TV that Lewis lodged complaints to the police about the PF cadres who were trailing him and his friends over their move to work with Keith Mukata and the UPND, but as usual the PF police being headed by Kakoma Kanganja rubbished the complaint despite showing them anonymous letters to stop working with Hon. Mukata and the UPND.

According to Muvi TV, in the evenings of 5 April 2016 PF thugs abducted, killed and hanged the body of Lewis Mwila with a wire to a branch of a tree less than 1 metre from the ground. Passersby found Lewis’ Body in a sitting position in the early hours of Wednesday 6 April 2016.

Meanwhile, Chilanga member of parliament Keith Mukata regrets the death of Lewis charging that PF should go after him instead of gruesomely murdering innocent citizens who are exercising their democratic right of belonging to any political party of their choice.

Forty One tractors and accessories worth over 27 million kwacha have been distributed to women under the government financed Women Empowerment programme.

Minister of Gender, Nkandu Luo says about 20 more tractors worth over 13 million kwacha will soon be distributed under the Women Empowerment programme.

Professor Luo disclosed this when she handed over three tractors in Mansa and Mwense Districts.

She said the move is in line with the government’s resolve to help women involved in agriculture through mechanizing their farming.

Professor Luo noted that women in Zambia have for many years been actively involved in agriculture hence the need to support them.

And Bahati Member of Parliament Harry Kalaba in whose constituency the tractors were distributed said the equipment will help women increase their yields.

Meanwhile, Chief Kalaba of the Ushi people in Mansa District praised government for distributing tractors to women in rural areas.

HH is hot favourite to win the August poll-Simutanyi

Dr Neo Simutanyi anouncing results of his opinion poll
Dr Neo Simutanyi

Political scientist Neo Simutanyi says the August 2016 elections puts UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as a hot favourite to win the poll.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Dr Simutanyi said Mr Hichilema is in the most unassailable position as hot favourite to win the 2016 presidential election.

“Granted the PF has won most of the parliamentary and local government by-elections held since Lungu assumed the presidency, but that may not reflect the true position regarding public opinion towards PF’s governance record,” Dr Simutanyi said.

He observed that incumbency advantages and a perception that it is of no value voting for the opposition has often persuaded voters to vote for the incumbent.

“We saw this under the MMD, that despite a good run in by-elections, the MMD tumbled in the 2011 general elections. This coming election will be a two-horse race, between the ruling PF and the UPND. The real contest will be between Edgar Lungu and Hakainde Hichilema,” he said.
“A kind of political re-match. Of course the election will be held under a new constitutional and electoral regime, in which the winner has to garner at least 50 percent plus one of the votes. If the voting patterns of the last five elections are anything to go by, the PF will need to take the competition offered by UPND very seriously,” Dr Simutanyi said.

He added that while it is too early to know with utmost certainty the intentions of the voters ahead of the 2016 general elections, the fractures within the ruling party point to serious problems that will influence voting choices.

“As I see it, three factors will work to favour UPND. First, without Michael Sata, the PF has a very weak and most unattractive candidate in Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Second, an economic crisis in the form of job losses of over 10,000 on the mines as a result of poor mine tax laws, debilitating electricity shortages/load-shedding; high mealie meal prices coupled with shortage of mealie meal; high exchange rates and high cost of living as a result of high inflation rate of 22.5%.”

“Thirdly, a divided and fragmented ruling party as a result of the succession battle to replace Michael Sata,” he said.

Dr Simutanyi observed that President Lungu’s preference for MMD leaders to loyal PF leaders may have alienated his potential base of support in the Copperbelt, Lusaka, Luapula, Muchinga and Northern provinces.

“Indeed, we have witnessed defections by former MMD leaders to PF, notably, Dora Siliya and Kapembwa Simbao who regained their seats on the PF ticket and are now part of Lungu’s political entourage. To be sure Lungu has completely changed the complexion of the original PF, which may be responsible for the current disenchantment within the upper echelons of the ruling party.”

He said the on-going defections from the PF and endorsements of the UPND are informed by these developments.

“As is customary these defections and endorsements have been dismissed as insignificant. Those who have left the PF have been branded ‘bitter’, ‘tribal’ and inconsequential. But I contend that the defections and endorsements are significant and of consequence if those leaving were influential and highly respected within the party and society at large, if they are leaving on matters of principle and if they have a discernible constituency,” he said.

He said the resignations from government by three deputy ministers within three months should be a matter of grave concern to the stability of a regime.

“Further, endorsements of HH’s candidature in the August 11 general elections from prominent individuals, including former vice president Guy Scott and eleven respected MMD sitting members of parliament is not a small matter which can be wished away. It has eroded public confidence in the PF and President Edgar Lungu’s leadership and suitability to continue in office,” he added.

He also charged that the meeting held on Tuesday 5th April, 2016 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and attended by leaders of 18 political parties, including President Lungu and Mr Hichilema has not done anything to stop violent confrontation between supporters of the two major parties.

“This is a bad indictment on Edgar Lungu, as it indicates that he is either unwilling or unable to command law-enforcement agencies to maintain law and order and protect citizens of the enjoyment of their rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia. My view is, there was no need for the inter-party meeting on political violence.”

He said it is within the power of the President of the Republic of Zambia to enforce law and order and to ensure that every citizen enjoys their political and civil rights as enshrined in Part 2 of the Constitution of Zambia.

“For failure to decisively deal with violence, Lungu has breached his oath of office and in some countries would have been liable to impeachment. Since Edgar Lungu’s ascent to the highest position in the land, we have witnessed claims from senior PF leaders of how he was the ‘chosen one’, how the PF won the election with a ‘landside’ and how the UPND was whitewashed, using Dandy Crazy’s rendition kolopa.com. It is important to put these claims into perceptive. It is erroneous and misleading to claim that Lungu’s 2015 victory was a ‘landslide’.”

He said former Vice President Guy Scott described the result as inconclusive and close to a draw in political terms.

“Despite former president Rupiah Banda’s support, PF’s support only increased by five percent from 2011, while that of UPND increased by more than 25%.”

Sampa attacked over his “I’ll be full Cabinet Minister if Sata was alive ” remark

40
Hon. Mles Sampa
Hon. Mles Sampa

IT IS not about becoming Cabinet minister that makes one a potential leader of a country but the manner in which that individual interacts with the people or conducts himself or herself, says Gallant Youth in Zambia (GYZ) executive director Henry Mulenga.

Mr Mulenga said he was shocked by remarks by former Commerce deputy minister Miles Sampa alleging that if President Michael Sata was still alive today he would be a full Cabinet minister by now.

Mr Mulenga said Mr Sampa was not ready to be a leader because a leader should not be bitter but instead have tolerance to save the people.

‘‘Mr Sampa resigned (from Government) because he could not stand being where he was without realizing that the presidency is God-given and it is not a guarantee that if someone is Cabinet minister, that can ascend him to the presidency,” he said.

He said Mr Sampa’s bitterness would take him nowhere because he had no patience, saying that more was expected to be heard about him following the memorandum of understanding he signed with the opposition UPND.

Mr Mulenga advised Mr Sampa, who is leader of the deregistered Democratic Front, to accept what he was and stop being bitter as that would show the type of a leader he was.

“It is surprising to see Mr Sampa coming out with such bitterness; and his claims that had his late uncle Sata not died he would have been made Cabinet minister shows the type of a leader he is, forgetting that it is not becoming Cabinet minister that makes you the next President, but the manner in which you interact with people or conduct yourself.

‘‘We wonder how UPND will work with him and what portfolio he would be given in the unlikely circumstances that UPND formed government, because he appears to be an individual who is only interested in being in big positions and nothing else,” he said.

Mr Sampa said at a press briefing on Tuesday that he was a hard working MP who deserved to be a full Cabinet minister but that President Edgar Lungu could not see his potential and sacrifice for the ruling Patriotic Front party, adding that after the January 2015 elections he was ripe for a full Cabinet position having agreed to campaign for President Lungu.

Old habits die hard

Court hammer

A LUSAKA man who forgave his wife after she committed adultery with a church elder has decided to divorce his spouse citing continued promiscuity.
Danny Sikazwe, 37, of Garden House told the Matero Local Court that despite his love for his wife Brenda Chipuma, he wants his marriage annulled because Chipuma does not love him.
He was speaking before Justices Lewis Mumba and Pauline Newa in a case where Sikazwe sued Chipuma, 25, of Ten Miles for divorce.
Sikazwe said after he caught his wife and a church elder, only known as Muleya, of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church having sex on a reed mat, he forgave them both.
He said hoping that, that would change their marriage for the better, he was hurt to see that Chipuma began to neglect him and her house chores.
“I would draw water, boil it for her, bathe her, cook for her, wash her clothes and even take lunch for her at the market where she works,” he said.
Upon hearing this, the gallery burst into laughter while others clapped their hands in disbelief.
Sikazwe said his wife was in the habit of staying out late in bars, adding that when he asked her why she was behaving like that, she told him, ‘In our family, women don’t stay with one man. Even my parents are divorced.’
He said Chipuma also told him she could not live with a man who cannot afford to buy a car or even a house.
And in her statement, Chipuma said after the adultery case, Sikazwe, who she has been married to for 11 years and with whom she has two children does not trust her.
“I complained to my father-in-law who told me my husband was once mad and when he takes alcohol, madness returns to him. He told me that Sikazwe would kill me and that I should leave him for the sake of my children,” she said.
Passing judgment, Justice Newa granted divorce with no compensation and ordered the couple to share all household goods and property acquired together.

Tenure of MMD NEC members ends on 11th April 2016- Nakacinda

5

Raphael Nakacinda
Raphael Nakacinda

Suspended MMD national Spokesperson Raphael Nakacinda says all members of NEC members who will be claiming to still be holding on to their positions after 11th April 2016 will just be masquerading as their tenure of office ends on that day.

And governance expert McDonald Chipenzi says the blood being spilt due to political violence is on the heads of President Edgar Lungu and Police Inspector General Kakoma Kankanja as they are the only people with the powers to stop the scourge.

Speaking when the duo featured on a discussion program on Joy FM radio Mr Nakacinda said the only person with an outside chance to protest against holding of the convention is the party President Dr Nevers Mumba who was elected at an extra ordinary convention in 2012.

He explained that all the other NEC members including those who have been appointed to replace the various members who either were expelled or left the party will not have the mandate to hold on to any position in the party.

He further noted that even the position of the president is up for elections because the constitution of the party dictates that the party shall go to a convention every five years and that all positions are electable at the convention.

He also said the decision to try and defer the convention by NEC is illegal as it is only given powers to make decisions in between conventions which does not include deferring the convention adding that they are certain decisions which are a preserve of the convention and not NEC.

Mr Nakacinda who was a staunch supporter of Dr Mumba explained that he tried to advise the Politburo, an executive body within the party that MMD is not like others parties because the founders left a strong constitution which has to be followed but that there are some members who have been adamant and that proceeding in the way the party is going will only end up destroying the same values which the party was founded on.

Asked if he agrees with members who fought Dr Mumba such as Dora Siliya and others who have been expelled from the party, Mr Nakacinda said that his support for Dr Mumba was based on the constitutional backing that he was the elected President of the party with the mandate to run it up to the end of his term.

On accusations that he has been bought by the other faction headed by Lunte MP Felix Mutati, Mr Nakacinda said he is above being bought and that he does not want to be on the wrong side of the constitution, precedence or be among the people who will be responsible of mutilating the party’s values and principles.

He said he would rather be alone than in group of people advancing an agenda he does not believe in for political expedience and personal gains.

He said if party leaders can try to advance their personal interests when they are outside government how far would they go in protecting the interests if they were giving the mandate to run the country adding that if the party does not adhere to its own rules then they have no moral rights to offer themselves for service to the nation.

And speaking on the same platform governance expert who is also former FODEP Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi said there are two people with the powers to stop political violence in the country.

He said President Lungu has only been issuing rhetorics but that he has not put his foot down saying every time the President issues a statement condemning political violence the opposite happens as members of his party will be reported to have committed the same crimes.

Mr Chipenzi said the other person who is in a position to stop the scourge is the Inspector General of police who he said is in charge of the Zambia Police.

He said the blood being spilt due to political violence is on the heads of the two leaders as they have failed to control the scourge.

He called on the civil society not to relent in their call for peaceful campaigns and elections saying their job will only become harder as the election date approaches.

He also called on the media to avoid falling into what he called Kambwili phobia by ensuring that they help the public with accurate information.

Man’s Heart, Eyes, Manhood removed in horrific killing in Lilyana

Another dead body has been picked up in Lusaka’s Lilanda compound.

The victim, a middle aged man has had his chest cavity torn apart, his man hood and eyes removed and his body was found near Lilanda Catholic Parish.

Police Deputy Spokesman Rae Hamoonga in a statement could not confirm whether the body was intact or not.

“There is a dead boy that has been found there but then when officers rushed to the scene, members of the public started throwing stones at them and they turned back,” Mr Hamoonga stated.

“We are mobilising ourselves to go back there in full riot gear. So for now we can’t confirm whether the body is intact or has some of its parts missing.”

Mr Hamoonga has since appealed for calm in the area so that Police could access the body and commence investigations into the matter.

And a near riot broke out in Lusaka’s Matero area after word went round that another body has been found in the area.

So far six people have suffered the fate of the gruesome murders.

Last week, the discovery of four bodies in George Compound sent shock waves across the city especially that private parts were removed.

Musicians challenge Times of Zambia to name the musicians involved in ritual killings

16

Zambia Association of Musicians, president, Njoya Tembo and other artists, take a group photo.
The Zambia Association of Musicians has challenged the Sunday Times of Zambia to name the musicians said to be connected to the ritual murders of four people in George compound.

Association President Njoya Tembo said the rule of law says, “Everyone is innocent until proven guilty”.

Mr Tembo said Times of Zambia, being a national publication with high credibility and having been in business for a long time, should be professional and therefore present facts.
“Unfortunately we find this particular story to lack clarity, leaving us in suspense, and that is our challenge,” he said.

He added, “Online media publications have little or no credibility as most of their stories have been malicious, especially when dealing with musicians – therefore, we have reservations.”

Mr Tembo said there are a number of musicians’ names on social media.

“As we got the news and heard that these musicians were “on the run”, we called them and all of them answered their phones and as usual, they were busy either in the studio, coming from a performance or (one of them was) at home with family,” he said.

“We feel that some evidence in form of a picture or video would be of help, especially since we are in the era of smart phones. It would also help to name which police station(s) has a record of holding the musicians. If the above information is provided and it is proven that indeed the musicians were connected, ZAM would be the first to condemn the musicians.”

He said, “We however condemn the brutal killings and pray for God’s grace to abound with the affected families as we hope that Police would conclude with their investigations soon. We realise that the blanket statement made and the withholding of the 5 artists’ names continues to fuel speculations as many more names continue coming up. This has potential to put at risk the names being suggested and can poison the little strides our music industry has attained so far.”

Mr Tembo said the Association believes that musicians are noble professionals just like lawyers, teachers, soccer players and can greatly succeed with passion and hard work applied, notwithstanding the existence of a few bad eggs.

“And the names on social media have already shown how well they have been doing for themselves. We therefore question the statement “…. rituals were being aimed for fame…” as the mentioned people have already attained fame and their works speak for themselves.”
He has since urged citizens to support the industry and patiently wait for proof to be given (if at all it is there), and the law to take its course – if this will get to that point.

Journalist Chamba Chimba II has revealed that doctors had to castrate him as part of treatment for his advanced prostate cancer he was diagnosed with in 2014.

Mr Chimba who is famed for his controversial television documentary Stand up for Zambia disclosed that since he is medically castrated, he is not able to produce sperms but that he is still able to have normal sex.

He said as a castrated man, he is now having what is known as dry sex.

Mr Chimba was is now the founding President of the newly registered Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Zambia was speaking this morning when he featured on the Hot Seat radio programme on Hot FM.

“You know sex is on the mind, so I am able to have sex but it is just that I can’t produce sperms because the cells that produce the sperms cannot multiply but I am able to have sex normally. I have dry orgasm and I enjoy sex as vigorously as I can. Sex is in the mind,” Mr Chimba said.

Mr Chimba also stated that reports that frequent masturbation causes prostate cancer in men in later years are mere myths.

He said most men above the age of 50 are living with prostate cancer in silence and dying silently.

Mr Chimba said the major challenge in fighting prostate cancer is the silence that most patients and families live with.

“The biggest scare is for most men is that they will be castrated but it shouldn’t be. You can maintain your normal function as a man moreover there are different risk categorisation of patients and that means that treatment approaches also differ,” he said.

He added, “Some patients may just have surgery especially for early diagnosis and those at intermediate stage while some may end up with radiation but they can still maintain their function. Castration is only for advanced cancer which has spread to other parts of the body like the case was with me but I thank God and the medical staff at the Cancer Diseases Hospital for the treatment, I am now feeling much better.”

He said, “the key challenge is about silence. When I was diagnosed I started talking about this and I vowed that I must live to tell the story and that is how we started the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Zambia because there has not been any organisation to openly talk about issues of prostate cancer. I appeal to families to talk about this. I sat down with my wife and to tell her about my situation and I also discussed the issue with my bigger family about what I was going through.”
