GOVERNMENT has urged the media to focus on issue based reporting if they are to attract international awards like the annual CNN African Media Awards.

Information and Broadcasting Services deputy minister Forrie Tembo said scandalizing personalities or defaming individuals would not earn the local Journalists international recognition.

Mr Tembo told journalists during the welcome dinner ahead of the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards 2015 that there was need for individual journalists to invest their resources into issue based reporting.

“You don’t expect to get nominated and eventually win an award with a defamatory story but issued based and investigative stories that help to shape society in the right direction,” Mr Tembo said.

“You don’t expect to get nominated and eventually win an award with a defamatory story but issued based and investigative stories that help to shape society in the right direction,” Mr Tembo said.

About 40 journalists from Zambia entered the awards but none was nominated. There are 31 finalists from 15 countries are expected to walk away with an award.

Mr Tembo, cited also the lack of exposure as one of the factors that led to none nomination of local journalists to the annual prestigious award.

He said it was against this background that Government decided to carry some local journalists so that they could learn from their counterparts and make a difference in future.

Mr Tembo said Government would continue working with partners like MultiChoice to help local journalists acquire and sharpen their skills for them to compete on the international scene favourably.

Mr Tembo, who is accompanied by information permanent Secretary Godfrey Malama, Director Media Development Isaac Chipampe, are here to witness the event which marks the 20th anniversary of the African media awards.

Mr. Saunders tells QFM News that President Lungu should relieve Mr Zulu of his duties so that he can concentrate on his court case.

He says the President can still reinstate his political aide in the event that he is cleared by the courts of law.

Mr Saunders adds that President Lungu should not be seen to be shielding anyone who is being investigated especially that he is on record saying he will not protect anyone found wanting.

Former Kasama Central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwamba says he is ready to concede defeat if he loses in the impending by-election.

Mr. Mwamba says it would be the wish of the people of Kasama Central if he loses and therefore he cannot reject their choice of whom they prefer to represent them in Parliament.

He has however told QFM News in an interview that he doubts anyone else other himself can win the by-election.

Mr. Mwamba says he does not think PF candidate Kelvin Sampa is any closer to matching his popularity in Kasama Central to beat him in the by-election.
He states that all the people that voted for him when he stood on the PF ticket in 2011 have now followed him to the UPND.

Mr. Mwamba says this is why he does not think what happened in Lubansenshi where the immediate past Member of Parliament Patrick Mucheleka was defeated would repeat itself in Kasama Central.

He adds that he is ready to counter any form of electoral corruption and vote buying that allegedly characterized the Lubansenshi by-election in order to keep what he has termed as his Parliamentary seat.

“For me to come I just have to do my best in training and the coach will decide whether I can play,” Mbesuma said.

Mbesuma added that the team was pleased to have secured a friendly against nemesis Egypt whom they have not beat since 1996.

“There is no friendly. We are just going there for a win,”Mbesuma said.

Mighty fails to beat Nakambala

1

Mufulira Wanderers and Nakambala Leopards on Friday afternoon battled to a 1-1 draw in a FAZ Super Division match at Shinde Stadium in
Mufulira.

Both goals came through in the first opening 15 minutes of this round 27 match watched by an encouraging crowd in Kantanshi.

Wanderers led just after a minute with forward Eric Chibuye finding the back of the net to excite home supporters.

However, the home sides lead lasted for 14 minutes as Nakambala equalised through Elijah Banda on 15 minutes.

It was a game in which both teams missed some great opportunities before settling for a stalemate.

Wanderers and Nakambala have now failed to outwit each other as the first round match finished with the same score-line on June 6 in
Mazabuka.

Meanwhile, this draw has pushed Mighty from sixth into fifth place with 42 points from 27 matches played.

On the other hand, relegation-threatened Nakambala remain stuck in 15th place although they have increased their tally to 24 points.

Gay casanova dragged to court

court

The guardian of a 27-year-old man of Mongu who is alleged to have masqueraded as a woman and permitted a taxi driver to have sex  with him against the order of nature has told the Mongu Magistrate’s Court that the family knows the accused as a woman and not a man.
Hatch Bril is alleged to have permitted a male person to have carnal knowledge of him against the order of nature.
Mark Sydney Wakings testified before magistrate Derrick Mate Chingumbe that his family who took Bril in early this year, has allegedly lived with the accused person as their “aunt.”
Mr Wakings said he brought Bril to Mongu from Lusaka to work in a salon because “she” is a good hair stylist.
Mr Wakings testified as a hostile witness on behalf of the state.
“Bril was introduced to me as an ‘aunt’ by my grandmother when I visited her [grandmother] in Lusaka’s Makeni area in 2014. So, when I opened a salon early this year, I was advised by the people in Lusaka to consider calling ‘her’ [Bril] and my cousin Doreen as the two are good hairstylists. However, Doreen left for reasons known to herself,” he said.
Mr Wakings told the court that he has on several occasions reprimanded Bril for returning home late.
“Bril liked moving at night and I warned ‘her’ against this behaviour. I even threatened to evict her from the house if she continued keeping late nights,” he said.
Earlier, the 19-year-old taxi driver, who is the complainant in the case, told the court that he reported Bril to the police because he felt ‘cheated’.
The man testified that he proposed love to Bril because he was convinced that ‘she’ was a woman, considering ‘her’ appearance on the fateful night.
He testified that on September 24, 2015 around 01:00 hours, he was stopped by a man near a lodge while he was driving home.
The man testified that he came to know the man who stopped him as George.
The witness testified that after he stopped his vehicle, George pleaded with him to drop him at a named nightclub.
The man testified that he accepted to give George a lift after he offered to buy fuel for the vehicle.
He man said when they reached town, he parked his vehicle at a car park near the nightclub where they met Bril.
He told the court that George proposed love to Bril and ‘she’ accepted on condition that he buys her beer in the night club.
He said the ‘couple’ along with him entered the club but left after taking a few drinks.
The man testified that George suggested that he should be dropped at his house in Yeta Plots with Bril, but ‘she’ turned down his proposal.
He narrated that after dropping George, he proposed love to Bril and ‘she’ accepted to go with him to his house in Imwiko Stage Two.
The man testified that on arrival at his house, he and Bril went straight to the bedroom and ‘she’ advised him to switch off the lights after he told ‘her’ to take off ‘her’ clothes.
He, however, said that Bril only took off the leggings and left ‘her’ top and bra on.
The man testified that he discovered that Bril was a man.
The man also said that his attempt to touch the breasts of his ‘lover’ also proved futile as the chest was flat.
He said it was at this point that he grabbed Bril and drove to his aunt’s place for reinforcement, before taking ‘her’ to the police station.
But in cross- examination, Bril said the man forced himself on ‘her’, adding that the sexual encounter happened in his car and not in his house.
Mr Chingumbe adjourned the case to October 14 for continuation of trial.

Enock Kavindele junior has withdrawn the Criminal complaint he filed with the Police against Presidential Political advisor Kaizer Zulu which followed a shooting incident at Chrismar Hotel.

Mr. Kavindele 42 made the withdrawal in an application before Lusaka principal resident Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile this morning.

He told the court when the matter came up for trial that he and Mr. Zulu have decided to put the past behind them as brothers.

Mr. Kavindele said his decision to withdrawal the matter is without any coercion stating that as a Christian, forgiveness forms the basis of his beliefs.
Magistrate Mikalile however, only granted the withdrawal of the first count that of threatening violence.

The second count of failure to take precaution against causing injury could not be withdrawn because it is solely up to the State whether to withdraw or not.

The State has since applied to for an adjournment to assess whether it can proceed or not with the matter on the second count against Mr. Zulu particularly that Mr. Kavindele who is suppose to be a witness has withdrawn all counts of the criminal complaint before the court.

Magistrate Mikalile has since adjourned the matter to the next week on 12th October.

UPND’s Decision not to take part in National Prayers not yet official-Charles Kakoma

Charles Kakoma

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) says its president Hakainde Hichilema’s preconditions for attending the national day of prayer and fasting next Sunday are not final as the party is yet to agree whether to participate in the event or not.

On Wednesday, Mr. Hichilema said before the county could go for prayers and fasting, there was need for Government to reflect and address alleged police brutality and abuse of the Public Order Act (POA) in which he and other opposition political parties and civil society organisations had found it difficult to freely operate under the current Government.

Mr. Hichilema also said Government needed to address what he termed as abuse of public media which he said had been turned into PF media houses yet they were funded by taxpayers’ money.

But when contacted for a comment yesterday, UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said the UPND had not made an official position on whether to participate or shun the national event on October 18, 2015.

Mr. Kakoma said his party was surprised by some statements by some politicians and civil society organisations that the party had boycotted the national day of prayers and fasting when it had never issued any statement to that effect.

He said he was surprised that some people had taken turns to condemn his party over the event when it had not refused to attend.

Mr Kakoma said the fact that the party had questioned the motive behind holding prayers when political players had not yet reconciled did not mean that the party had made a position that it would not attend. “We are even surprised that some people have been taking turns to condemn UPND over the prayers when we have not even taken a position as to whether we will attend or not. What we have done is to question the motive to call for prayers even before we reconcile as politicians over our previous differences because our prayers will be irrelevant without reconciliation.

“There has been a lot of bickering among us politicians and we thought the first thing we needed to do was to reconcile so that as we go for prayers, we are in one accord. Otherwise, we are not opposed to prayers and we have not yet made any position over the same. This is why we find attacks on this matter unfortunate,” Mr. Kakoma said.

He explained that the party may come up with a position over the national day of prayers and fasting today when the National Executive Committee would be meeting to discuss other matters.

“The NEC will be meeting tomorrow (today) to discuss some issues and am sure one of the issues that will be resolved is the day of national prayers but as things stand, UPND has never made any statement to that effect and we are wondering why people are busy making statements accusing us of shunning the event,” he said.

President Lungu has declared Sunday, October 18, 2015 as a day of repentance, prayer and fasting throughout the country.

Barely a year in office, he
has made sure that he fights all Zambian Management Staff that are not bootlickers and are able to stand up against him for that which is right.

We are urgently requesting the powers that be, to ensure that Mike Roach is deported out of this country within 30 days of the publication of this of this news.

Here is a synopsis of his clandestine activities at JTI Leaf Zambia Limited, Trinity office Park in Lusaka;

Mike Roach came to Zambia after our very good and caring boss, Rob Royle was transferred to Geneva by the powers that be in JTI Global. Rob was and is a very professional, respectable and generous person. He is a man, one would want to work with for the rest of their career. We really do miss Rob as employees at the center of JTI Leaf Zambia Limited. However since Mike came in, he has made sure a lot of us are bruised from right to center.

An honorable and hardworking Chief Financial Officer (CFO) by the names of Ennie Kihedu – Tanzanian by nationality who worked for over 10 years at JTI, was unceremoniously fired and made to pack her office belongings like a casual worker. This was all Mike’s activities aiming at intimidating all those that are opposed to his leadership style and are able to stand up and say NO, this is wrong. He fought such a vicious battle by embarrassing this hardworking and upright woman till she was dismissed.

Mike uses words like; f…..ck you, I will fire you, I will suspend you, fool, get out, I don’t care, you can report me anywhere, go and tell me,tell me, I will charge you

A lot of employees were shocked to learn of such a development within three months of Mike’s coming to Zambia. Before this incident, JTI Leaf Zambia Limited was a very good place to work from, but this is a thing of the past as this man has declared war on all employees, this includes his muzungu anikondes like the current CFO who is currently subjected to all sorts of directives and commands to execute on behalf of Mike. This man can never manage the responsibility bestowed on him as CFO, never. The Man is too raw for this position of CFO and the quicker this is sorted, the better for JTI as a global Company. He can never handle any issue alone before reporting employees to Mike who happens to be his savior and master.
Currently we have all sorts of disciplinary cases going on; Mike has instructed the CFO to suspend our hardworking and focused Manager in-charge of Farmer Financing – Winston Magutswi.

Paul Chiimba our Leaf Operations Manager FCV Kaoma, has just been given a letter of dismissal by another muzungu anikonde – our Human Resource & Administration Manager, all this under Mike Roach’s scanthing instructions.

There is more coming as Mike’s plan at the moment is to ensure that he crashes all these qualified Zambian workers and carry on with his scheme of employing White guys in jobs that can be carried out by Zambians. What he has forgotten because of his arrogance and greedy is this that the people affected are not resting. We will take Mike on until he is deported out of
this country. We are tired and will not allow one man destroy that strong bond we have had before he came in with his rhetoric behavior.

Mike uses words like; f…..ck you, I will fire you, I will suspend you, fool, get out, I don’t care, you can report me anywhere, go and tell me,tell me, I will charge you, I want this done without fail etc. to intimidate and frustrate employees in the organization. This is our first appeal to the office of the President, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Justice, Director General – Immigration department to at all costs deport Mike out of this country, failure to which, we as employees will deal with him so hard that he will regret ever having come to Zambia!

Enough is enough!

In The Kitchen With Kanta : Grilled Cheese toastie

Grilled cheese toastie

I don’t know about you, but personally I don’t always have the time or energy to make a lavish healthy meal, with all the trimmings.  After a long hard day of baking and decorating, like today; I just want to put my feet up with a tasty and hearty bite, and a cool soft drink. So today I’m going to make a delicious, warm, and gooey, Grilled Cheese toastie, with a sweet and tangy tomato dip.  I’m so excited; the thought alone is making me salivate.

I hear some of you say “what is this ‘Grilled cheese toastie’ that you speak of Kanta?”

Well…a grilled cheese toastie is basically a sandwich with melted cheese inside it; and yes it is different to cheese on toast.  It sometimes contains a variety of tasty extras like bacon, tuna or veggies, but cheese is always the primary ingredient.  It’s the perfect midnight snack or soup-dipper and the perfect thing to tuck into after a night out of drinking and partying.  It’s great for children and never turned down by adults. It is salty, gooey, buttery, and comforting in all the right ways; with the right amount of crunch, and most importantly; quick, cheap and cheerful.

Before we get started on the recipe, here are a few grilled cheese facts.

A grilled cheese must….

  • Be a closed sandwich
  • Have cheese as the primary ingredient. Other ingredients can complement the cheese, but shouldn’t overwhelm it.
  • Be made with sliced bread
  • Be served hot all the way through, with the cheese completely melted.
  • Be cooked on a flat, greased surface (like a frying pan) until both sides are golden brown; and must never be baked or deep-fried.

So without further ado, here’s today’s recipe

Preparation and cooking time: 15 minutes

Serves: 1 person

Ingredients

For the grilled cheese

  • 2 slices of wholemeal bread (you may use white bread)
  • About 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese (you can use any cheese that is not dry, white and crumbly like goats cheese)
  • ¼ tin of Tuna, drained and seasoned lightly with a pinch of salt and paprika
  • 3 tbsp salted butter

For the dip

  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • ¼ onion, chopped
  • 2 tsps Hellman’s light mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp thyme (optional)
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Method

Turn on the stove to a low–medium heat.  On a frying pan melt the butter, and brown each slice of bread on both sides first.

Remove from the pan.  Now add cheese to each slice of bread and spread the tuna on top of the cheese, so that when the sandwich is closed, the tuna will be in the center.  Close and cut the sandwich in half, as desired.

Melt more butter (if needed), and place the sandwich on the pan, covering it with a lid; cook for 2 minutes, until the bread is evenly golden brown on the bottom side. Flip, cover and cook again for about 2 more minutes, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is visibly melted.

Meanwhile add all the ingredients for the dip into a small bowl and mix until everything is combined; remembering to wash your tomato and onion before chopping.

Serving

Plate up this wonderful and tantalizing grilled cheese, eat it whilst it’s still warm; open up your favorite soft drink, relax and enjoy this delicious treat.  You deserve it!!

JCTR wants priority placed on the much talked about diversification in this year budget

CURRENT RISING COST OF LIVING AND BUDGET EXPECTATIONS

The Millers Association of Zambia this week announced the intention to increase maize prices for 25Kg bags for both breakfast meal and roller meal from an average of K75.00 to between K80.00 to K90.00 and from K53.00 to between K60.00 and K70.00.

The JCTR also noted that in the same period ZESCO issued a statement on their application to Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to allow it to more than double the cost of electricity (from K0.31/kilowatt hour to K0.88/kilowatt hour) for all customers except mining firms effective 1st November 2015. This follows President E. C. Lungu’s speech as he opened Parliament on 18th September 2015, where he indeed mentioned that there would be an increase in electricity tariffs by approximately 84%.

It is with this background and that of the monthly JCTR Basics Needs Basket research findings of September that the JCTR raises concern over what is being done to ensure that ordinary Zambians are able to cope with these raising prices and looming increases of various costs.

The JCTR Basic Needs Basket (BNB) for the month of September for an average family of five living in Lusaka recorded a significant increase in the cost of both food and essential non-food items from K1024.91 to K1, 072.92 (K48.01 increase) and from K2, 806.33 to K2884.54 (K78.21 increase) respectively.

It was noted that of the food items 10 out of 15 food items monitored on a monthly basis increased in price such as mealie-meal, beans, beef, green vegetables, bread, sugar etc. while of the essential non-food items 4 out of the 7 items increased i.e. charcoal, Bathing soap and washing soap and petroleum jelly.

Increases thus in both the staple food mealie meal and that of electricity serves only to worsen the already critical livelihoods of the poor living in Zambia. Not to mention that the cost of doing business in almost all sectors has gone up as the try to cope with the current load shedding situation by buying generators and using fuel whose prices rose in the month of July.

It even more saddening for households that depend on the mining sector in our Copperbelt province that have even a greater challenge to overcome with job losses in the midst of raising cost of living.

The JCTR thus hopes that in the announcing of the 2016 Budget for Zambia in Parliament the rising cost of living and the various economic shocks that Zambia has faced in the third quarter of 2015 will be taken into account and solutions addressed. The Centre hopes to see in next year’s budget priority will be placed on the much talked about diversification of the Zambian economy through sustainable projects.

It is noted that government has placed an emphasis on the creation of meaningful and gainful employment and the Centre is looking to a 2016 budget that creates an environment that will ensure private sector involvement in production and manufacturing and thereby the creation of jobs and viable incomes that contribute to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This can be done through reducing the cost of doing business for women and youths to enable them participate in adding value to local goods through manufacturing which will broaden the tax base and reduce poverty levels among the marginalized.

It would thus add value to the government’s plan to implement various industrialization and empowerment schemes with various ministries. It is also hoped that government will take more stringent measures to ensure lower levels of default and increase loan repayments actualized as these would help these empowerment projects be self-sustainable and reduce wastage of funds.

Looking towards Agriculture, it is hoped that the results of this year’s pilot E-Voucher system will be used to develop a comprehensive system that will be rolled out to ensure inclusivity and fair distribution in the FISP Programme for efficiency in view of the increase of beneficiaries. In this key sector that government hopes to diversify to, it will be necessary to see that in the 2016 budget funds are allocated in the ministry of agriculture towards research and development, alternatives to synthetic chemical fertilizer that is expensive, embracing more sustainable agricultural systems, improving value addition through manufacturing and ensuring a more transparent, efficient and private sector led marketing system.

JCTR hopes to see a broadened tax base to include the informal sector as the formal sector has been carrying the tax burden for all sectors. To ensure easy compliance and efficiency, revenue collection of the informal sector could be done through the district councils and an internal system of accountability towards councils in the overall administration process e.g. the current tax on rental income.

This would add value to their work in the collection of other taxes such as parking tax and toll gates if government provides an automated system the collects information in real time and uses local banks in the areas on behalf of the treasury. The Centre also hopes to see a strengthening and increased allocation to ZRA to enable them to adequately collect more fund through increasing staff and investing in staff training.

To improve load shedding the Centre hopes that Government will set aside funds for effective completion of projects that have been proposed to improver power generation e.g. installation of solar panels and expansion of currently existing hydro-power stations. It is hoped that this will not be another case where years from now we look back.

It is hoped that with these relevant changes, there will not only be an improvement on the performance of the economy but also improve the lives of the people. JCTR would like the budget to make relevant adjustments that will focus on the marginalized and reduce the gap between the rich and the poor.

PF’s winning of 2016 polls will depend on how it deals with economic woes – Simuusa

Simuusa and Lungu addressing the Kitwe rally

Patriotic Front Nchanga Member of Parliament Wylbur Simuusa says the ruling party’s chances of winning the 2016 elections will depend on how it deals with the current economic challenges facing the country.

In an interview with Qfm News, Mr. Simuusa has cited the power deficit and the volatility of the Kwacha as some of the issues which the PF must deal with.

Mr. Simuusa notes that the PF government is in control as far as infrastructure development is concerned, but that it also needs to start listening to the people.

He says this means that the government has to adopt a less-talk-and-more-action approach to dealing with challenges that the country is currently going through.

Mr Simuusa has also noted the need for the PF to transform itself from being a draconian government to one with a human face which explains issues to the people.

He thinks that in this way the PF government will be showing to people that it understands what they are going through and is doing something to improve the situation.

He states that the foundation upon which PF was founded gives the party a higher chance of bouncing back to power in 2016.

Mr. Simuusa adds that the PF already has an advantage to win the 2016 general election because it is the party in government.

But Political Analyst Alex Ng’oma believes the current prevailing economic challenges in the country will not have a bearing on next year’s general election.

Dr. Ng’oma also notes that it is too early to determine which political party will win the 2016 elections.

He says while people will be concerned and apprehensive especially that cost of living has gone up, they will be cautious when it comes to voting in the 2016 elections.

But Works and Supply Minister Yamfwa Mukanga says the ruling party has better chances of winning the 2016 general election despite the current economic challenges the country is facing.

Mr. Mukanga says Zambians have confidence in the ruling party owing to the massive infrastructure development taking place around the country.
