Investor confidence exists despite Levy’s demise

29

The Livingstone Tourism Association (LTA) says investor confidence in the country will not be disturbed after President Levy Mwanawasa’s untimely death.

LTA Secretary Fredrick Mwendapole who is also former Livingstone Mayor said the investor confidence would be maintained if peace prevails.

Mr Mwendapole said fears by sections of society that investors would withdraw following Dr Mwanawasa’s death had disappeared because investor confidence still exists especially in the tourism sector.

In an interview with ZANIS in Livingstone on Tuesday, Mr. Mwendapole said the late Pesident left a firm foundation of good policies that built investor confidence and it would take goodwill to continue where he left from.

He confirmed that LTA was initially worried like the rest of the country about Dr Mwanawasa’s demise but was later elated that investors were still willing to stay on as long as peace reigned in the country.

Mr. Mwendapole said Zambia had in the past few years managed to be on the top 10 list of preferred tourism destinations in the world saying investors had played a major role in achieving this.

He said Zambians had to continue working with foreign investors if the country was to sustain its development and maintain its status as a peaceful country even after Dr Mwanawasa’s death.

And Mr. Mwendapole disclosed that the LTA was working with government to ensure that tourism investment moved to Kazungula district.

He said it would be a great achievement for Kazungula to become a greater Livingstone because it had tremendous potential for business opportunities and tourism activities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwendapole advised the MMD to choose a credible leader with a good vision for the country to succeed President Mwanawasa.

He said the person would not need to be the same as the late President but be committed enough to ensure he achieved the vision the president had for the country.

He said the nation needed somebody with insight and a heart for the poor and underprivileged.

52

Chiefs in Luapula province have called for the suspension of Presidential by-elections but allow the acting President, Rupiah Banda to continue until 2011.

Speaking in separate interviews with ZANIS on Tuesday, chief Kashinka of Mwense district said in his opinion, there was no need to hold a costly presidential by-election when Mr Banda as acting President was capable of running government until 2011.

He appealed to political parties in the country to heed to his appeal for the sake of peace in the country.

And Senior chief Lukwesa of Samfya district said acting President, Mr. Banda was best placed to govern the country until 2011.

He said Mr. Banda has so far proved to be a capable leader.

Meanwhile, Chief Puta of Chiengi district said he would not support a presidential candidate whose hands were soiled.

He said traditional leaders would only support aspiring presidential candidates with attributes that were similar to those of the late President Mwanawasa.

And chief Chisunka of Mansa district echoed the other chiefs’ proposal.

And business stalled Tuesday afternoon in Ndola with late Republican President Mwanawasa’s body arrival for viewing.

Most companies suspended business to avail their staff chance to view the late Dr Mwanawasa’s body.

The ceremony that started at 12:30 hours at the International Trade Fair (ITF) grounds with a prayer by Zambia Army Chaplain Hendrix Moma praying that the Christian nation declaration should be upheld by all Zambians during the mourning period and beyond.

Major Moma also prayed for unity among Zambians adding that the next leadership continue with the late President Mwanawasa’s vision of improving the national economy for the benefit of all people.

He described the late president as a leader who upheld firmness while embracing fairness in dealing with issues that confront the nation.

He said Dr. Mwanawasa believed in the rule of law as opposed to exploitation.

He therefore challenged the church to stand firm in praying for peaceful transition of government.

And CopperBelt Minister Mwansa Mbulakulima said Dr. Mwanawasa will be remembered for successfully implementing policies of revamping the mining industry in the province.

He acknowledged that Dr. Mwanawasa tirelessly devoted his efforts to establishing the Copperbelt as an economic hub through value addition to local products and services through establishment of the Chambishi economic zone.

He called on Zambians to remember the late President by upholding values of transparency, the rule of law and democracy as they mourn the late leader.

Meanwhile, the ITF grounds were full to capacity as people from different parts of the province assembled to view the body of the late president.

Security had a tough time controlling an impatient crowd as it filed past Dr. Mwanawasa’s casket.

First lady Maureen is among family members and government officials accompanying the body of Dr. Mwanawasa.

MMD extends deadline for presidential application

71

The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has extended the deadline of submitting application letters from individuals wishing to stand as presidential candidates for the forthcoming by-elections on its ticket.

The extension is from the initial deadline of August 26th to Friday, August 29th 2008.

Party National Secretary, Katele Kalumba, said in a press statement to ZANIS today that the MMD would accept applications from all eligible members of the party for the position of president.

Dr. Kalumba said the party would not intimidate anyone who would like to stand for the position.

“The national secretary would like to warn that no member, no family, occupation, region, religion, tribe, no gender should be intimidated in their aspirations to be considered as candidates for republican presidency under MMD ticket,” he said.

He further explained that applications from candidates would be considered in confidence until they were cleared by the his office

He said the MMD constitution required that convection be held for the election and therefore, the legal committee which was detailed to look at the mode of adoption could make recommendation to the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Dr. Kalumba MMD was a party that existed to promote democracy and fight discrimination and therefore, it must support those who would want to aspire to be considered for president under MMD ticket.

Faz silent on Fifa Reply as Zambia Returns Home

28

A veil of silence engulfed Faz on Tuesday as to the  reply from Fifa over the staging of Zambia’s 2010 World/Africa Cup Group 11 game against Togo in Chililabombwe on September 6.

Word on an official statement never came by the close of business on Tuesday at Football House in Lusaka.

The situation hasnt helped at all after Faz have found themselves mis-interrupted in a media gaff over the Togo game being staged during the 21-day period of national mourning.

Faz has retreated into defensive mode demanding only faxed press queries and overall remained silent on feedback from Fifa preferably hoping to make an official announcement at Wednesday press briefing in the safe confines of Football House.

On Monday, Faz communications officer Erick Mwanza was caught on camera in an off-the-record interview on local nationwide TV saying should it be difficult to stage an international game during the period of national mourning the junior team might have to sneak out to fulfill its obligations.

Meanwhile, Zambia coach Herve Renard has said he is satisfied with his squads 10-day training camp in Germany.

The team returned home on Monday evening.

And Renard also hinted at the prospect of handing Germany-based midfielder Andrew Sinkala of 2.Bundesliga side FC Augsburg a recall in the near future.

“Step by step, we are making progress. In the last 10 days we have been in Germany the players have grown in confidence, “Renard said.

“Although I do not want to be happy in training but also after the end of the qualifying round.”

On Sinkala, the Frenchman said: “He (Sinkala) is good and I might consider him in future. Time is short for me to assess him for the game against Togo.”

The team is expected to regroup on Thursday in Kitwe.

Leave first lady out of presidential debate, Teta

299

Ruling MMD Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Ben Tetamashimba has urged party members to stop implicating the First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa in the presidential by-election debate.

Mr. Tetamashimba said Mrs. Mwanawasa has already clearly stated her position on the matter, adding that she could not turn round after the husband’s death.

In a press statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Tetamashimba said the first lady’s position which she gave to the nation was that she was not available to contest the republican presidency.

Mr. Tetamashimba’s reaction comes in the wake of a continuing heated debate on whether first lady Maureen Mwanawasa should contest in the forth coming presidential by-election or not.

He said Mrs. Mwanawasa instead deserves to be helped by the government to look after the children as suggested earlier by Patriotic Front president Michael Sata.

Mr. Tetamashimba has since commended that PF leader for suggesting the idea of looking after the Mwanawasa family.

He has also cautioned some party members against mounting pressure in the party and charged that such people had an agenda to cause division in the party.

Mr. Tetamashimba has also said that he would on August 30, give a comprehensive statement on why Vice President Rupiah Banda should stand as a presidential candidate on the MMD ticket for the forthcoming presidential by-elections in November.

He said a statement will also be given on what transpired between Mr. Sata and Mrs. Mwanawasa in Chipata yesterday.

And Former  Kitwe Mayor  William Nyirenda has called on the ruling MMD to adopt acting President Rupiah Banda for the forthcoming Presidential by-election to maintain political stability.

ZANIS Kitwe Reports that Mr Nyirenda who is also a prominent Kitwe lawyer, said in an interview that the  MMD has no time to identify and come up with another  leader within this short  time hence the need to adopt Mr Banda.

Mr Nyirenda noted that allowing  various people in the MMD to contest for the vacant position will breed chaos and disunity in the ruling party and the country as a whole.

He also advised  the opposition political parties vying for the republican presidency to seriously rethink their position and allow Mr Rupiah Banda to take the mantle of power and complete the three years remaining for the late Dr  Mwanawasa’s  term of Office.

Mr Nyirenda said the opposition political parties must support the candidature of Mr Banda to allow the MMD complete their term and all the economic programmes embarked on by the deceased head of state.

He said the opposition political parties should wait for the 2011 tripartite elections which were more competitive than the forthcoming presidential bye election.

He also appealed to the people that were sitting on the National Constitution  Conference to learn from this experience when drafting the new constitution by making the Vice president a Presidential running mate.

In Southern Province, Chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka has advised the MMD to nominate Vice President, Rupia Banda as its presidential candidate during the forthcoming presidential by-election.

The chief told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that floating a different candidate other than Mr Rupiah Banda will split the ruling party into divisions.

He said Mr Banda has proved that he is capable of running the affairs of the country as evidenced by the manner in which he has handled national duties when the late president Mwanawasa was hospitalised in France.

And chief Mwanachingwala has advised the MMD to handle the succession of president Mwanawasa with care to avoid spliting the party.

He said the current situation where senior members are issuing statements on their preferred candidates is not healthy for the ruling party.

IZB contributes K45m for state funeral expenses

53

Indo-Zambia Bank (IZB) limited has contributed K45 million towards the late President Levy Mwanawasa’s state funeral expenses.

The contribution, which has since been handed over to the Bank of Zambia (BoZ), is the first to be made by a commercial bank after the central bank requested various banks in the country to open accounts for funeral expenses.

And speaking after receiving the cheque, Bank of Zambia Governor, Caleb Fundanga commended Indo Zambia Bank for the gesture.

Dr. Fundanga said government alone could not meet the state funeral expenses because they were enormous.

He said the gesture was also in line with the Zambian tradition of contributing and gathering resources for the funeral to ease the burden of the mourners and to also to mourn the late Dr. Mwanawasa with dignity.

Dr. Fundanga has since urged Zambians to contribute towards meeting the state funeral expenses through depositing their money in commercial banks who in turn will transfer the money to BoZ.

He added that the money will be handed over to cabinet office.

He also urged Zambians to continue applying policies which the departed President left in order to create wealth and improve the economy of the country.

And Dr. Fundanga said his institution has also opened a book of condolences in honour of the late President Mwanawasa, who died in Paris, France on 19th August 2008.

Earlier, Indo Zambia Bank (IBZ) Managing Director, Cyril Patro commended BoZ for calling upon commercial banks to contribute towards meeting the late President Mwanawasa’s funeral expenses.

Mr. Patro said the bank’s initiative would help sustain government’s expenditure during the national mourning period.

He also said his bank received President Mwanawasa’s death with sorrow.

He said the death of the President was not only a loss to Zambia but to the international community as well.

Mr. Patro has also urged Zambians to endeavor to live up to the late President Mwanawasa’s vision of growing the country’s economy.

And IBZ board chairperson, Orlean Moyo, assured government of her bank’s support during the national mourning period.

Mrs. Moyo saidthe bank would pass on the money collected from its clients through the newly opened state funeral account to the government.

Last week, Dr. Caleb Fundanga, in correspondence to commercial banks and other key players in the country’s financial sector, urged banks to open similar funeral accounts into which customers and the general public would be able to make contributions.

These contributions will then be channeled by BoZ to the government of the republic of Zambia.

Succession debates be suspended for now- Nawakwi

110

Politicians and Zambians at large have been advised to stop the  succession talk and concentrate on concluding the funeral for the late President Levy Mwanawasa.

Forum for Development and Democracy-FDD President Edith Nawakwi told ZANIS in Kasama that those who are anxious to take over from the late Dr. Mwanawasa should  wait until the late President is buried.

Ms. Nawakwi people should be mature and respect this period of mourning which she said is a Zambian way of doing things.

“Let us give our brother dignity and bury him in peace. Some people are literally squabbling over inheritance when we have not even buried Levy,” she said.

She pointed out that  talking about  succeeding DR. Mwanawasa at such a time when the nation has not even buried the late beloved President is sending a wrong signal to the Zambian people.

“This is not the right time. I felt too distressed the last couple of days s some people have engaged themselves in succession squabbles,” said Ms. Nawakwi.

The FDD Leader said talking about inheritance might send a wrong message not only to the outside world that the country is disunited.

“Levy died  and did not die in vain. He died in pursuant of unity not only for Zambia but Africa as a whole. And every one in the region is looking to Zambia to see how we shall mourn our late President,” said Ms. Nawakwi.

She advised all politicians to forget their differences and look at the future of Zambia.

Ms. Nawakwi said at a personal level, the late President Mwanawasa had a heart to reach as evidenced  by  the number of people who had begun focusing on Zambia as their investment destination.

And the body of the  late President  Mwanawasa’s body was this morning at 07:14 hours flown to Mansa in Luapula province.

As the Zambia Airways Plane carrying Dr. Mwanawasa’s body started off for the runway, people of Kasama wailed and waved their last goodbye to the Late President.

The body is accompanied by First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Simon Miti, Chief of Protocol Ambassador Darius Bubala, the late President Mwanawasa’s Aid-de Camp Joseph Kaonga and other senior government officials and family members.

The late President’s body was seen off at the Kasama Airport by Northern Province Minister Lameck Chibombamilimo, Commerce Minister Felix Mutati, Works and Supply Minister Kapembwa Simbao, Community Development Minister, Catherine Namugala and Forum for Development and Democracy-FDD President Edith Nawakwi.

Others were Energy Deputy Minister Gunston Sichilima, Northern Province Permanent Secretary Gabriel Kaunda, senior government and party officials.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chibombamilimo described the body viewing programme for the late President Mwanawasa as peaceful and a success.

Mr. Chibombamilimo said at least thousands of people in the Northern province were accorded a chance to body view their late President.

He said the people of Northern province loved the late President going by the attendance during the body viewing programme.

Let Mrs Mwanawasa take over as president, Northern Province Minister

507

Northern Province Minister, Lameck Chibombamilimo has proposed that Mrs Mwanawasa should take over as president, saying she has the attributes necessary for the job. He said in Lusaka Sunday that Mrs Mwanawasa’s credentials were appropriate for this period and that she could be trusted to stick to the principles set by Mwanawasa.

“We cannot doubt her capacity to discharge the duties of this office as we have been witnesses to her developmental work scattered throughout the country and her leadership at the continental level where she has led her fellow first ladies in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” Chibombamilimo said in a statement.

He said a cross-section of Zambians would not hesitate to rally behind Mrs Mwanawasa as a way of honoring her late husband’s vision.

“My strongest appeal to my fellow leaders in government and the ruling party is that we put aside our individual pursuit for leadership and demonstrate to the nation and the world at large that we are not in power for the sake of power,” he said.

And losing Matero MMD candidate in the 2006 general elections, Goodward Mulubwa has echoed Chibombamilimo’s sentiments.

Mulubwa said Mrs Mwanawasa had the right qualities befitting a national president.

He said the first lady was well known countrywide because of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative programs she had been undertaking.

Kasama body viewing ceremony incident free

36

Ministry of Home Affairs Deputy Permanent Secretary, Solomon Jere has described the body viewing ceremony of the late President Levy Mwanawasa as incident free despite the commotion that occurred as people jostled to view the body.

People at Kasama stadium pushed down a wall of the stadium as they pushed their way in to view the body of the late President.

Dr. Jere, who was in charge of security at the stadium said the commotion was caused by the excited people who did not want to follow the queue to the body viewing point.

He said security personnel from the Zambia Police, the Zambia Army, the Zambia Air Force, the Zambia National Service and the Zambia Prisons Service moved in quickly to restore order.

Meanwhile, the body viewing ceremony in Kasama ended at 17:14 hours from the proposed 16:30 hours.

The extension of the body viewing ceremony was due to a large turn out of people.

And chief of protocol, Darius Bubala said it was not possible for everyone to view the body because there were too many people that turned up.

Mr. Bubala said the body would be taken to Mansa tomorrow at 06:00 hours.

And in Chipata thousands of people from all the eight districts of Eastern province this morning gathered at the Chipata airport to pay their last respects to the late Republican President, Dr. Levy Mwanawasa.

The people started arriving at the airport as early as 6:00 hours.

A check by ZANIS in town found people in strategic positions waiting to be ferried to the airport.

Those present at the airport included paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people , representative of Kalonga Gawa Undi  of the Chewa people in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique  Joseph Chikuta and other traditional leaders from around the province.

Government officials included Eastern province Minister, Charles Shawa, Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, Members of Parliament from Eastern Province, heads of parastatal companies, the business community and the church.

First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa and other relatives to the late Dr. Mwanawasa arrived, together with the body of the late President Mwanawasa, at the airport 08:36 hours.

The body was received at the airport by Mr. Shawa and other senior government officials.

The military personnel, who were at hand to receive the body, conducted the military procession, carried the casket of late President Mwanawasa and later laid it on the dais before body viewing.

And Speaking before body viewing commenced, Mr. Shawa described late Dr. Mwanawasa as a hero and gallant son of Zambia, who facilitated a number of developmental projects in the province.

Mr. Shawa, who quoted 1 Samuel 4:22 and liken the late Dr. Mwanawasa to David in the Bible, said the late president was a leader, a brother, a mentor and a father.

He said the late President Mwanawasa revitalized the Chipata-Mchinji railway project, which is scheduled to be completed this year.

He further said the late head of state had a passion for the agriculture sector, which led to increased crop production in the province.

He said the departed President’s commitment to the sector led to government increasing the subsidies on the Fertilizer Support Programme from 60 per cent to 75 per cent.

Mr. Shawa said a number of road works were currently ongoing that on the Chipata-Lundazi road, adding that 23 pieces of earth moving machines have already arrived in the district.

And MMD Provincial Executive Committee Chairman, Kennedy Zulu, said the province had lost a father who had done a lot of work to reduce poverty.

Due to the President’s commitment to develop the area, Mr. Zulu said a lot of investors were attracted in the province.

He said the late President has helped to build the party in the province such that it can now boast of having the strongest party in the province.

Meanwhile, the body viewing has ended and the body has since been flown to Kasama.

However a lot of people that gathered at the airport to pay their last respects to the departed President did not viewed the body because of the massive turn out of the people.

Military personnel had a tough time to control the people that wanted to have a glimpse of the late President Mwanawasa’s body.

Meanwhile a boy was injured in the stampede and was rushed to the hospital.

President Levy Mwanawasa died last week at France’s Percy Military Hospital following a stroke he suffered on June 29, this year while attending the Africa Union Summit in Egypt.

Meanwhile, business came to a stand still in Chipata district this morning as people from all districts of the province went to pay their last respects to late President Levy Mwanawasa.

And the Eastern Province Royal Foundation has appreciated government’s move to allow the people of in the province to be the first to view the body of Dr Mwanawasa among the eight provinces.

Most shops in both the town center and the second class trading area closed to allow both shop keepers and shop owners, attend the body viewing ceremony of the late Dr. Mwanawasa, which took place at Chipata airport.

A check by ZANIS found all shops closed at the second class trading area, formerly known as Down Shops, while a few shops remained open for business at the town centre.

And all government and private offices remained closed to let officers attend the sorrowful occasion.

A few people that were found in town said they wanted to go to the airport but failed to do so because of lack of transport.

Owen Kapembwa of Kapata Township said he was unable to go to the airport because he could not manage to get on the trucks that were ferrying people because of his physical disability.

Masiye Muyunda explained that he did not manage to get to the picking point at Barclays Square in town early enough for him to access transport.

Trucks from both the public and private sector went to pick up mourners at various points in all district of the province.

BOZ opens state funeral account

51

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has opened a state funeral account to ease government’s financial burden of conducting the funeral of the late President Levy Mwanawasa and subsequent by elections.

BoZ Head of Public Relations, Kanguya Mayondi said the ongoing state funeral and the subsequent presidential by-election would have a significant financial drain from the national treasury.

“The ongoing state funeral and subsequent presidential elections will have a significant impact on the national treasury and the implementation of the remaining projects for the 2008 budget,” Mr. Mayondi said.

Mr. Mayondi told ZANIS in a statement this evening that it was in this vain that the central bank decided to open a “state funeral account”, whose number is 0014931764530.

“The account was opened last week on Friday, 22nd, August 2008 and is aimed at receiving contributions towards national event from Banks, private organizations and any other well wisher,” he said.

He said as the proceeds of the state funeral account would be accumulating, they would be handed over to government before the burial day of the late President, which is September 3rd, 2008.

Mr. Mayondi said BoZ Governor, Caleb Fundanga has since urged banks to open similar accounts into which customers and the general public were able to make contributions.

“These contributions will then be channeled through the Bank of Zambia to the government of the Republic of Zambia,” he said.

Dr. Mwanawasa died on August 19th, 2008 in Paris where he was admitted and treated for a stroke.

Government has declared a 21 day national mourning period for the late President.

Two days ago, Barclays bank Zambia also opened an account whose proceeds would go towards funeral expenses.

Taking of Levy’s body to provinces is not contempt

31

Kitwe elder man Patrick Tembo has said the decision by government to take the body of late President Levy Mwanawasa to provinces for body viewing did not mean disrespecting the deceased head of state.

Mr. Tembo said people should not misunderstood this decision, adding that it was not fair for some people to think that government was using the death of Dr Mwanawasa as campaign trick for the ruling party.

In interview with ZANIS in Kitwe today, Mr. Tembo said people, who felt that it was costly to take the body to all provincial centres, were doing that in bad faith.

He said not all people could afford to travel to Lusaka to pay their last respect to their beloved President hence the decision by government to take the body to provinces.

And Kitwe Town Clerk, Ali Simwinga, said it was a great honour by government to take the body to the people who elected him into office.

Mr. Simwinga said people would be grateful to honour the departed President by viewing the body of a leader who worked very hard for Zambia.

He also said the good things that the President stood for should not end with his death but should be continued.

Meanwhile, the Zambia National Former Councillors Association (ZNFCA) said the country has lost a sincere leader who had a vision of harmonizing and reconciling the nation.

ZNFCA president, Gabriel Chishimba prayed that the Almighty God should grant the nation the love, vision, strength and resolve needed to realise late Dr. Mwanawasa’s dream for a better nation.

He said the executive and all members of the association were mourning Dr. Mwanawasa with deep sorrow and grief.
Kitwe Mayor, Divo Katete, has taken a swipe at opposition political leaders for allegedly misleading Zambian’s over the late President Levy Mwanawasa’s leadership, whose economic policies have helped turn Zambia’s economy around.

ZANIS Kitwe reports that Mr. Katete, who is from the opposition Patriotic Front (PF), alleged that most of the Zambian political leaders were not honest and consistent with their criticism about the President.

He said it was such criticism that had made some Zambians believe that Dr. Mwanawasa’s economic policies were bad when in fact not.

He said the late President Mwanawasa could have achieved a lot in his tenure of office if the Zambian opposition political leaders had supported his policies and told people truth about his achievement.

Mr. Katete said this at Kitwe District Commissioner, Macdonald Mtine’s office, when he signed the book of condolences opened in memory of Dr. Mwanawasa today.

Dr. Mwanawasa passed away at Percy Military Hospital in France on Tuesday last week.

He urged the Zambian political leaders to be honest when making criticisms and not just say good things and honour a sitting president he has passed on.

He said opposition leaders could have told Zambians the truth about the late President’s leadership so that more Zambians could appreciate and supported his work.

Mr. Katete appealed to politicians to bring sanity in Zambian politics and honour national leaders while they were still alive.

And speaking earlier, Mr. Mtine urged Zambians to bury their differences by loving one another as demonstrated by the late Dr. Mwanawasa.

Mr. Mtine said the late Dr. Mwanawasa preached love, unity and reconciliation values which he said must be emulated by all Zambians.

And Town Clerk, Ali Simwinga, said the late Dr. Mwanawasa had facilitated the implementation of various developmental projects which had added value to the economy.

Mr. Simwinga said the K14 billion market rehabilitation programme, the construction of a shopping mall and the Kitwe water rehabilitation project were some of the major projects the late President facilitated to ensure that there was development in the city.

And High Court Judges, Magistrates and members of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) also signed in the book of condolences which was opened at the Boma offices at 08:00 hours today.

Others, who signed the book, were political leaders from various political parties, heads of government departments and Kitwe residents.

He said, “Therefore, the late republican President Dr. Mwanawasa will be buried at Embassy Park in Lusaka and not at his Palabana farm.”

Earlier, government had announced that Dr. Mwanawasa would be buried at his Palabana farm in Chongwe district on September 3rd, 2008.

I wont contest presidential by-election – Mulongoti

121

Chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, says he has no intentions to contest the presidential by- elections slated for November this year.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, told journalists at a press briefing in Lusaka today that he would not apply to contest the presidency because he wanted to concentrate on his work.

“Let me categorically state that I have no wish to contest the by-elections but it is however open to other MMD members who wish to participate,” he said.

“I am the Chairman of elections for the MMD and how would it look if I contested the Presidency? Automatically it would mean I would do everything possible to get everything in my favour,” Mr. Mulongoti said.

Mr. Mulongoti has also appealed to MMD party members wishing to contest the presidency to file in their nominations after the period of national mourning.

He charged that party members should be moral and not panic to file in their nominations until after the burial of the late President Mwanawasa.

“I am appealing to those of our members who are panicking to file in their applications to hold on to their letters until the period of national mourning is over,” Mr. Mulongoti said.

He however said that all party members were free to file in their applications.

The Presidential by-elections have been necessitated by the death of President Mwanawasa.

Dr Mwanawasa died at Percy Military hospital in Paris, France on the 19th August 2008 where he was admitted after he suffered a stroke.

The late President fell ill in Egypt while attending the African Union (AU) heads of state summit on June 29th, 2008.

He will be put to rest on the 3rd of September 2008 at Embassy Park, off independence avenue, opposite cabinet office in Lusaka.

Government has since declared 21days of national mourning.
