Women’s club appeal for equipment

1

Kitwe District Commissioner, Macdonald Mtine, has appealed to Heifer International to consider assisting the Shakalabe Women’s Club of Kitwe’s Kafinsa Mission acquire modern  equipment.

The women’s club requires equipment to o make the milk  production project more
economically viable.

Mr Mtine said the group is currently producing milk products such as Ice cream,
cheese and vanilla chocolate.

Mr Mtine told ZANIS in an Interview in Kitwe today that the group has received 66
cattle from Heifer International that are being used in milk production.

He said Heifer international has been distributing livestock to women groups and
families engaged in farming in Kitwe’s Kafinsa area as a way of empowering them
economically.

He noted that the group, which is doing very fine, requires proper equipment and
financial help  if the project is to grow.

poverty is to be alleviated.

Minister refutes reports on Mpulungu Harbor port

30

Northern Province Minister Lameck Chibombamilimo has dismissed as false recent media reports that Zambia’s only port in Mpulungu will soon turn into a white elephant if no measures are taken to improve it to international standards.

Mr. Chibombamilimo, who is also Mpulungu Member of parliament, said to the contrary a lot of positive development has  taken place from the time Mpulungu Harbour management took over the running of the port from government.

The Minister told ZANIS in Kasama that the current investor at Mpulungu Harbour has
so far invested billions of Kwacha in the Procurement of modern equipment to enhance
operations to the country’s only port.

He added that the new equipment has enhanced the shipment of goods at Mpulungu Port to the Great lakes Region as evidenced by the docking of five ships at the harbour
every week.

Mr. Chibombamilimo also said as a result of the increase in business activities at
the Harbour, government was now collecting more revenue from goods  entering the
country.

The Minister further expressed confidence that Mpulungu Port would be able to
compete favourably with the new port being constructed on the Tanzania side once the
development plan being put in place by Mpulungu Harbour management was implemented
fully.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chibombamilimo has called for partnership between the Government  and Mpulungu Harbour Management on the possibility of acquiring a permanent Ship for Mpulungu Harbour to avoid dependence on Ships from neighbouring countries for the movement of goods.

He further appealed to government to consider constructing a r always line from
Nseluka to Mpulungu to increase inflow and outflow of cargo at Mpulungu Port.

National Team Update and Weekend Scorecard

40

Speculation is mounting that Patrick Phiri might not just make the trip with Zambia for their final 2008 Africa Cup Group 11 qualifier against South Africa on September 8.

The alleged dressing room bust-up between striker Collins Mbesuma and Captain Chris Katongo at the end of Zambia’s 1-1 draw with Chad on Saturday has not helped matters as questions have arisen as to whether there is unity in the team and overall of Phiri’s grip on things in camp.

Not the kind of situation a coach would like to deal with after an embarrassing performance over the weekend that has left the two-time Africa Cup silver medalists looking at missing their second finals in four years.

The Ghosts of Benin on the road to the 2004 finals when Phiri failed to guide Zambia to the finals for the first time since 1990 have returned to haunt the softly spoken coach with a terrible feeling of De Ja Vu.

2nd placed Zambia on 8 points will have to beat leaders South Africa on 11 points by 2-0 in September in their final game to book their plane tickets to Accra.

On buses to work this morning, in offices, and over lunch the major topic was all about “what if.”

For the man who will/might take over from Phiri I have some simple advice for you. Should you achieve the impossible according to my judgment and get Zambia to Ghana make sure your contract lasts until the team’s final game at the Africa Cup.

Chungu, Kabwe appeal against London judgment

29

TWO of Second Republican President Fredrick Chiluba’s co-defendants Aaron Chungu and Faustin Kabwe have appealed against the London high court judgment in which they have jointly been found liable to have defrauded Zambia of billions of Kwacha.
According to the judgment, Mr Kabwe and Mr Chungu who are directors of Access Financial Services, a company linked to the looting of the public funds, each owe the country $27 million.
Attorney General, Mumba Malila, said in an interview yesterday that the duo filed in notices at the London Court of Appeals on Thursday.
Mr Malila, however, said their action would have no bearing on the execution of the judgment in which they have been ordered to pay back 85 per cent of the money that was misappropriated from the Government’s ZAMTROP account during Dr Chiluba’s 10 year reign.
“Despite the appeal the judgment is capable of enforcement,” he said.
This was in the case in which the Attorney General had instituted civil proceedings against Dr Chiluba and 19 others in the London high court, which found them liable of defrauding the country billions of Kwacha.
Mr Malila has since obtained a freezing injunction to prevent Dr Chiluba and his co-defendants from gaining access to their assets in England and Zambia.
On whether Dr Chiluba had challenged the registration of the London high court judgment in Zambia on June 13, Mr Malila said: “We do expect a response but to my knowledge such an action has not yet been taken but we are ready for the challenge when it comes.”
Any application to set aside the registration should be within seven days while execution on the judgment would not be issued until the seven days expires.
Dr Chiluba’s other co-defendants include former Zambia Intelligence Security Services (ZISS) director general Xavier Chungu, former ambassador to the US Attan Shansonga, former Permanent Secretary at the ministry of Finance Stella Chibanda, Cave Malik and Company, Congolese businessman, Raphael Soriano, also known as Katebe Katoto and Francis Kaunda.

Avoid factions – Katele

152

MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba has appealed to members to avoid factional meetings that are likely to be misconstrued as campaigns for the party presidency.

In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Dr Kalumba advised them to heed President Mwanawasa’s directive to stop the debate on his succession for the sake of unity in the party.

“There is a good reason why the President directed as he did, there is discipline in the party and all members must obey the leadership. I do not wish this meeting (by Western Province politicians) to give rise to panic and finger pointing,” Dr Kalumba said.

Some prominent people from the Western Province are alleged to have met on March 4, 2007 to identify a leader to succeed President Mwanawasa.

Dr Kalumba said he had spoken to senior members of the party who were reported to have attended the meeting, among them MMD national chairman, Michael Mabenga, who assured him that this was not a matter that should alarm members.

“The national chairman assured me that he would not be party to any attempt to create regional factions and that he did not subscribe to the objectives of the meeting,” Dr Kalumba said.

He said although it was understandable that people in different regions would be sitting in caucuses to consider their political options, President Mwanawasa directed that the debate over his successor should be halted.

“My appeal to our members is that they should avoid associating themselves with meetings likely to be misconstrued as being campaigns for the party presidency,” Dr Kalumba said.

He said as members, the people of Western Province would have an opportunity at the right time to consider their political options like any other province.

Modelling is a profession – Chifire

0

Youth, Sport and Child Development Deputy Minister, Angela Chifire, says modelling is one form of self -employment in Zambia which has potential to create wealth.

Miss Chifire says  modelling celebrities have an effective role in human capital formation out for vulnerable and less privileged sections of communities by building capacities of their target groups to participate in national development activities and cope with their challenges.

Miss Chifire said this when she crowned the” Miss Youth Zambia 2007″, Chama Mulubwa of Kasisi Girls High school in Chongwe, who emerged winner of the competition held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre on Friday night.

She challenged the 15 final participants in the contest  as role  to be partners in
the provision of services, knowledge and information to the less privileged in their
local communities.

The minister also encouraged the youth to guard one another against perpetrators of
evils like child abuse and people likely to encourage HIV/AIDS infections and help
their   orphaned friends.

She reminded the youth to join the other groups in pursuit of improved living
conditions for the less privileged in society, saying the nation was witnessing an
increase of child headed households.

Miss Chifire commended “My Choice” led by Ms Kina Robertshaw and other companies
that contributed to the hosting of the competition, saying the department of Youth
Development alone in Lusaka Province which initiated the idea, could not have
managed to put up such a show..

She appealed to other cooperating partners like the Commonwealth Youth programme to help the ministry take the initiative to higher level to give it a national face.

Miss Chifire urged the contestants to remain ambassadors of peace and development in
their various communities and commended them for taking up the challenge.
.
Earlier, Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Susan Sikaneta, also saluted Ms
Robertshaw for  assisting the Department of Youth  in the province with financial
resources to organize the event  and encouraged her to  continue contributing to the
welfare of young people.

Ms Sikaneta also advised the contestants to continue working hard to develop their
talents, saying modelling today was a highly paying field.

She stated that her office will  remain supportive of the contest programme to
ensure that it improves.

Ms Sikaneta also crowned Miss Personality for Miss Youth Zambia, Ngosa Chela, the
Second Princes, Mainza Mwanga and the First Princes, Loginia Banda.

Analyse by-election budgets critically – Prof. Anyangwe

2

An Academician has urged African countries to critically analyze budgets for by-election which he said are a drain of resources for national development.

Professor Carlson Anyangwe stated that resources that are channeled to holding of
by- elections could go a long in developing the country.

He pointed out the K3 billion spend on the recent Kapoche by- election was a huge
amount which, if invested in the constituency, can go a long way fostering development in the area.

Prof. Anyangwe stated that few people enter politics out of conviction and ideology,
hence the increase in the number of politicians jumping from one political party to
other.

Speaking when he featured on ZNBC’s Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Good Governance programme today, Prof Anyangwe implored governments on the continent to work in harmony with the civil society.

He said governments on the continent would not have achieved development to the
level they have without the partnership of the civil society.

“There is no cause for government to be fearful of the civil societies, they are now
playing the role which the political parties and ordinary citizens are supposed to
be taking,” he said.

CHAZ aplauded for supporting HIV programmes among youths

2

The CHURCHES ASSOCIATION OF ZAMBIA  (CHAZ) has been applauded for
it’s continued support in fighting HIV/AIDS amongst youths.

Acting Monze District Commissioner, Mathias Fundi, said it was gratifying to note
that CHAZ in Zambia had continued supporting youths under the project of multisectoral behavioural change campign using it’s global fund.

Mr.Fundi was speaking during a running for life programme held at the catholic
diocease of Monze today for youths from various districts in southern province including
Siavonga,Choma,Kalomo,Mazabuka and Monze.

He said the programe was an HIV/AIDS project targeting youths between the ages of 12
and 19 years.

Mr Fundi said that it was important that the CHAZ global funds were spent on
prevention of new HIV infections in order to conquer the pandemic.

The acting DC said youths were the leaders of tomorrow that  needed to be protected
from indulging in evil vices that would make them vulnerable to contracting the HIV virus.

And Catholic diocease of Monze Vica General, Father Sebestian Milimo, said at the
same occassion that the programe was an educational one aimed at teaching youths through sport about HIV/AIDS,Malaria and T.B that had been the major health problems in Zambia.

The Vica General explained that youths form clubs and trained twice in a week for a
period of six months under the same programe before meeting for final competitions.

Father Milimo said this year there were seven clubs with two in Chivuna, two in
Chirundu, four in Monze, two in Pemba, two in Kasiya and two in Kalomo.

He said that after training, the youths were given peer talks and once every month
they could meet for health talks where they discussed the three major diseases which are HIV/AIDS, Malaria and T.B.

He added that after six months all the clubs met for a final competition of running
for life whose aim was to
assess what they had been doing and learning during the period.

Father Milimo also thanked CHAZ for the financial support rendered to Monze diocese
as a receipiant and CELIM-Italian Volunteers for the technical support.

Namulambe calls MPs opposing government’s constitution roadmap to resign

41

Government has called on opposition members of parliament opposing its roadmap on the constitution making process to resign for failing to keep the oath they took to defend on the constitution.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development, Gabriel Namulambe, made the call in
Mufulira yesterday when he addressed Faith Based Organisations  (FBOs).

The minister told Christians to rally behind the government suggested roadmap and
reject the short cut that the opposition political parties and civil society are
demanding.

Mr. Namulambe said the country is not  in a governance crisis for people to suggest
unsubstantiated roadmap.

He urged the congregants to ignore calls by the opposition and civil society for a
Constituent Assembly, saying they are just a small fraction of Zambians intending to
enrich themselves at the expense of development.

The minister told the people that it was not Biblical to be in conflict with
government and demonize leaders as this will entail they are rebelling against God.

The minister, who earlier asked pastors to lay hands on him so that he could be able
to provide good leadership entrusted on him by the President, reminded the
Christians to submit to government as expected  of them by the word of God.

He said government will not bend on its position over the constitution making
process, adding that if  it means asking God to change the constitution, it will be
done.

And speaking earlier prophet Haggai Kalaba said leaders who are in government have a
responsibility given to them by God to  provide for the needy and not to give
excuses.

He said God has ordained government to bring sanity and people are to respect the
word of God in totality.

The minister also toured various projects that the FBOs in the district are runing
that include promotion of traditions, sporting activities and support and care to
vulnerable children.

Mr. Namulambe commended the FBOs for their initiatives and encouraged them to
replicate the activities to other towns who are waiting upon government to provide.

Lenshina sect members thanks Mwanawasa for welcoming them back

44

The followers who went in ‘exile’ in 1964 to Democratic Republic of Congo, by then Zaire, sent their gratitude message to the President through the Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development, Gabriel Namulambe, who visited them in Mufulira yesterday.

Lenshina sect, originally from Chinsali district, is now working with other Faith
Based Organizations in the district under the name Lenshina Support Group.

Chairperson of the group, Lewis Chanda, said the sect is willing to work with the
government of President Mwanawasa to improve their living standards.

Mr. Chanda lamented that Mama Lenshina’s members can not sustain their living
because they have no basic education as they were forced out of the country by the
first republican government.

He said they have suffered enough as a result of their faith that government by then
did not recognize.

They appealed to government to assist them settle and empower them with survival
skills as citizens of the land.

The regrouped support group is staying in seven different locations in the district.

Mr. Namulambe however encouraged the members to work so that government can only
supplement their efforts.

Lenshina sect was disbanded by UNIP government in 1964 for unlawfull religious acts.
Mama Lenshina was their spiritual leader from Chinsali district.

The sect came back into the country during the second republican government of
former President Chiluba.

Retired head teachers causing riots in Copperbelt schools?

0

Some retired head teachers who were still managing high schools in Mufulira have been blamed for the recent riots by pupils that rocked the district.

The district administration has since resolved to relieve the concerned head
teachers of their duties with immediate effect.

District Commissioner, Dyford Muulwa, revealed this to the Minister of Sport, Youth
and Child Development, Gabriel Namulambe during a briefing on the situation
obtaining in the district.

Mr. Muulwa said the resolution was made at a meeting held with all high school
management, the district education staff and the office of town clerk.

The meeting was called to establish the root cause of riots by pupils in high schools.

The DC said the riotous behaviour was engineered by some teachers who are not happy
with the conduct of retired head teachers who have continued managing the
institutions against government regulations.

The other reasons established are that pupils do not know why schools have not
bought buses and also poor condition of sanitary facilities despite paying fees
towards the projects.

Mr. Namulambe wondered why some teachers resorted to using pupils to air out their
grievances yet the issues at hand can be sorted out by the district
administratively.

He told the DC to identify the teachers involved and charge them with damaging
public property.

He further recommended that some teachers should not be recommended for promotion
but be transferred else where.

Kantanshi, Butondo and Chankwa High schools pupil last week rioted, causing damage
to their school buildings.

Meanwhile police in the district have confirmed that the 38 pupils who were arrested
on Thursday for riotous behaviour have been released on bond.

District police second in command Chinyama Kalobwani said the pupils were released
yesterday on bond because the alleged ring leader was not among the arrested.

A comment from police spokesperson Bonny Kapeso on the matter failed by press time.

Chad leave Zambia in a dust storm

82

Chad left Zambia laughing all the way back to N’djamena today after collecting their first point in Group 11 to leave Zambia’s chances of taking their Africa Cup qualifying pool qualifier to the wire.

Zambia started off very casually as Chad took the game to their hosts.

Chad took the deserved lead in the 18th minute through Hillaire Kedgui leaving the hosts and the Konkola crowd stunned.

However, Zambia did have a good chance just eight minutes before Chad took the lead.

In that instance, Collins Mbesuma attempt with the spectacular via a bicycle-kick courtesy of a Jacob Mulenga cross went horribly wrong when the formers best effort at that was an air-shot at point-blank range.

The goal meanwhile was certainly a wake-up call for Zambia who until then not troubled Chad’s defence.

Felix Katongo had a low drive in the 24th minute cleared off the line while Mulenga’s flying header three minutes later flew inches wide.

Moreover, Chad goalkeeper Amel Koulara was too good as he denied chances by the hosts attackers with Felix Katongo’s 41st minute stunning effort the highlight of the saved shots.

Dead on 45 minutes, Mulenga rasping shot was parried by Koulara as Rainford Kalaba blasted the rebound high and over.

The first signs of the equalizer came on 48 minutes when Christopher Katongo playing a deeper role in midfield reminiscent of his Green Buffaloes days saw his attempt in a one-on-one with the outstanding Koulara gathered.

On the 55 minutes, relief arrived. Finally.

Zesco United defender Willy Chinyama’s drive was too hot for Koulara to hold and this time Mbesuma’s goal instincts didn’t desert him to poke-in the ball to level scores.

The wind was then taken out of Zambia’s sails just before the hour-mark when Mulenga was taken off injured.

Mulenga’s departure left Zambia without the decisive the robust pace they badly needed.

It got worse after Felix Katongo’s departure too due to a knock seven minutes later living the hosts as mare pedestrians while Mbesuma turned into a modest showboater.

Zambia too refused to use the vast space they created in front of goal while bearing down on Chad choosing instead to go the naive route for width that came to nothing and were easily telegraph by Chad.

Furthermore, Zambia had only two convincing chances after the hour-mark with Kalaba’s 78th minute free kick going inches high while Christopher Katongo’s 90th minute shot saved.

And now after Zambia’s wasteful show the waiting game for tomorrow afternoons Congo-Brazzaville- South Africa result beckons.
