Maize Production Almost a Success Story

0

maifield_inzambia.jpgZambia is poised to have a maize surplus this season but it is still unlikely that the food will reach many of the 58 percent of Zambians that are classified as extremely poor. The ministry of agriculture recently released a national food balance sheet showing that the country will have a surplus of 160,000 metric tonnes of maize during the 2006/07. In the 2005/06 season the output was 63 percent above the previous season and 54 percent above the five-year average.

Only a few years ago, such a surplus of Zambians’ main staple crop would have seemed an unreachable dream. Successive droughts had caused a food crisis in the eastern and southern parts of the country, the main maize producing areas.

The official squad list however does not include Zesco United midfielder Rainford Kalaba.

Kalaba failed to turn-up on the eve of the squads unveiling just 24 hours after receiving a late call-up.

BRA ALERT !

2

The statistics are shocking 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra .Yes, you are most likely wearing the wrong bra this minute! A bra can be a woman’s “best” friend. A good fitting bra will accentuate the body silhouette under clothes.

Signs of a wrong bra

* Falling straps.
* The bra creates a “ double bubble” effect.
* A band that rides high in the back across shoulder blades.
* A bra that looks lumpy under clothes Underwires that push or poke your skin.
* A bra that leaves marks on the skin.

Find your fit

Measurement 1.

Full bust. Measure the full bust circumference. The tape should be held horizontal, flat on your back and your arms should be down .Do not let the tape droop in the back and do not pull the tape tight. Jot this number down. E.g. 38 inches

Measurement 2 (band/bra size)

Under bust Measure around the rib cage. The tape should not be tight. Jot this number down. Add 5 inches to this measurement. If the number is an odd number add 1 to make it even.

Measurement 3 (cup size – projection of breasts from chest wall)

Difference between Full bust and band size

[TABLE=3]

1 INCH ~ 2.5cm

Example:

Step 1

Band size – 31 inches add 5 = 36 inches

Step2

Full bust – 39 inches

Step 3

39 – 36 = 3 inches difference cup size

Bra size is 36 C

Now that you’ve bought the correct bra, how do you take care of it.

* ALTERNATE BRAS -Your body gives off heat and that makes the lycra in the bra to stretch. The lycra needs 24 hours to cool off. So wearing your bra for more than one day in a row will cause it to deteriorate faster. Alternating bras everyday will make them last longer.
* WASH – It is best to handwash your bra daily to lengthen its life and remove all the dirt and oil that accumulated in it during the day.
* FABRIC- A fabric blend is often your best choice.

Zambia’s Anti-Corruption Drive Misses the Point

2

lpm.JPGZambia’s anti-corruption drive is failing because the government has been concentrating its resources on investigating the corrupt practices of the previous regime, allowing present graft in the public service to flourish, a corruption watchdog said in its latest report. Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Indices [CPI] has consistently ranked Zambia as one of the most corrupt countries since 2001.

Zambian Football Tuesday Update 1

0

Peter Kaumba trims his Under 23 All Africa Games and Olympics squad to 19 tomorrow evening after playing Power Dynamos at Garden Park here in Kitwe in their final training game before switching camp to Lusaka on Thursday.

It hasn’t been plain sailing in the attacking department for the Under 23’s with recent call-up Brian Chilando showing little spark while Felix Nsunzu had two sniffs at goal in their 1-1 draw away to Nchanga rangers on Saturday in Chingola.

Today, assistant coach Dean Mwiinde admitted they had a striker problem but steered clear of using the word crisis.

“It’s an open book and you can’t close the door on that one,” Mwiinde said.

“Meanwhile, we are working on that. We have done a lot of shooting in training and expect the ratio of scoring to improve.”

Zambia national team head coach Patrick Phiri who is with the team in an advisory capacity said he was confident the strikers they had would deliver.

“Match day temperament is very different from what you see in a training game and am positive you will see a great difference when they play Malawi,” Phiri said.

Zambia Under 23 host Malawi on February 7 in Lusaka in an Olympic Games football tournament qualifier 1st round, 1st leg match.

Meanwhile, Nsunzu is a doubt for Wednesday training game due to slight knock and has been working out on his own since Monday.

Mwiinde said the bench will not risk playing the Konkola Blades striker and would let him rest before reviewing his injury status on Friday.

Nsunzu scored two goals in the Under 23’s Olympic qualifier preliminary round single leg 10-0 win over Djibouti played in Lusaka last October.

Govt to invest $65 million in Indeni

1
The Zambian government and French oil major Total SA (TOT) are set to invest up to $65 million in the country’s sole petroleum refinery, Indeni, in the next five years as the country seeks to stabilize fuel supply to its vast copper mines, according to a report from the Ministry of Energy and Water Development obtained by Dow Jones Newswires.
Total and the Zambian government each hold 50% in the Indeni refinery, which closed Jan. 2 for restoration work. It started partial output last week and is expected to be fully operational by the end of this week, industry insiders said.
The report also said Zambia is also seeking to blend refined petroleum products with biofuels such ethanol from molasses and biodiesel from jathropha trees in a bid to guarantee security of supply and reduce dependence on imports.
The report said the government has realized the scale of the growing demand of fuel, led by the mining and manufacturing sectors, and has put in place a strategic reserve fund to stabilize fuel supply. Oil marketing companies are also expected to keep 15-day fuel reserves to avoid a crisis.
Investment in the Zambian mining industry continue to rise significantly, spurred by a recovery in copper prices on the international market and increased copper demand from China.
Zambia’s 2007 copper output is seen at 600,000 metric tons, rising to over 700,000 tons in 2008.

Lumwana copper project wins award

5

Zambia continues to amass accolades for its burgeoning mining sector. The latest news is that Equinox Minerals’ Lumwana project has been awarded Mining Deal of the Year by Project Finance International (PFI) at the PFI Annual Awards Dinner held recently in London, England. The prestigious PFI Awards are decided by the industry through a public on-line voting process. The awards host over 30 different citations regionally and globally and are widely recognized as the ultimate symbol of excellence and achievement in the project finance industry. The Company’s award represented the winner in PFI’s European, Middle Eastern and African category.

The award recognizes the company’s significant achievement in securing the $583.8 million senior and subordinated project finance debt facility for the completion of development and construction of Lumwana . The debt facility will be provided by a syndicate of European, African and Australian based Commercial Lenders, Developmental Finance Institutions and Export Credit Agencies.

Lumwana, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Equinox – which is dual listed on the Toronto and Australian Stock exchanges (Ticker EQN), is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, west of the world-renowned Copperbelt. With proven and probable reserves totalling 321 million tonnes of ore grading 0.73% copper, Lumwana represents one of the largest fully permitted copper projects in the world currently in construction. Mine construction remains on schedule with commissioning expected during the second quarter of 2008.

Craig Williams, Equinox President and CEO said “Signing the Lumwana debt package was a milestone event for the company. The facility underpins the Lumwana project and as such, was a critical achievement to timely development of Africa’s largest copper mine. We are delighted that our solid work, conducted over some 25 months, has been recognized at the highest level by the project finance community. We came to Zambia in 1996 and to Lumwana in 1999 and our progress is testament to the tenacity, skill and perseverance of the committed Equinox team who are bringing this exciting development to reality.”
