By Hildah Nambela

Swiss Arabian has launched its first ever showroom in Southern Africa. Swiss Arabian has achieved an important milestone as being the first brand store in Zambia, pioneering a movement for more brand stores to set up shop in the country.

The aromatic event was initiated with a press conference, a ribbon cutting ceremony which was done by the Permanent Secretary (PS) Robert Matakala, Swiss Arabian General Manager for global sales Pankaj Attery and Swiss Arabian Zambia Chief Executive Officer (Ceo) Ashutosh Shamar. The new showroom signifies the commencement of a renewed period of heritage for Swiss Arabian, as a commitment to create a diverse portfolio of unique fragrances.

Speaking on behalf of Sheal S Muyaba MP, Permanent Secretary Robert Kalamata said “As the UAE continues to expand its economic influence on the African continent, Zambia’s favorable political environment continues gaining investor confidence.”

He added that the country’s rich natural resources and growing consumer market provides an enabling environment for UAE business investments to thrive in a range of sectors.

Mr. Kalamata also said “The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and industry has recognized Zambia as a major emerging region of the world’s economy.”

Swiss Arabian General Manager for global sales Mr. Pankaj Attery expressed his gratitude to the Zambian government and his excitement to start a new journey in Zambia as the beginning of their planned investment in the country.

He said that “if the showroom proves to be successful, we plan on opening a bottling plant in Zambia that will cater for the Southern African region.”

Swiss Arabian Zambia Chief Executive Officer Mr. Ashutosh Shamar said that the company is depending on the Zambian market to give Swiss Arabian a chance as they plan to revolutionize people’s views of the perfume industry and the perfume industry as a whole.

This launch attracted officials from the government such as the Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, Elias Mubanga, social media influencers, business executives and representatives of Swiss Arabian group. Story courtesy of Suma Systems.

UNAIDS Executive Director Visits Zambia

The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Executive Director, Winnie Byanyina is expected to visit the country from June 7th to June 10th 2022 for high-level meetings with the government and other stakeholders in supporting the Country’s efforts to manage HIV/AIDS in the Country.

According to a press statement released to the in Lusaka today by UNAIDS Country Office, Ms. Byanyina who is also the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations is expected to hold discussions around youth empowerment, addressing inequalities and removing barriers to accessing services and other related topics.

And UNAIDS Country Director, Tharcisse Barihuta says the visit is very important for the Country, which still has a significant HIV pandemic with more than 1.5 million people living with HIV and as the Country UNAIDS office is set to launch its New Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework in line with the Government’s 8th National Development Plan.

“This visit could not have come at a better time as the United Nations in Zambia is getting ready to launch its new sustainable development cooperation framework for support from 2023 to 2027, which is aligned to the Government’s 8th National Development Plan. We are more determined than ever to support and leave no one behind” she said.

Ms Barihuta said Zambia has made important progress and met milestones in the fight against HIV/AIDS and has noted with concern the increased numbers of new infections despite the consistent reduction among the general population and young women.

Another rock of authority believed to be at Mulungushi University-NHCC

The National Heritage Conservation Commission is evaluating the likelihood of marking the rock in Kapiri Mposhi believed to have historical significance to the liberation struggle like the documented Mulungushi Rock of Authority.

National Heritage Conservation Commission Acting Executive Director, Ndiyoyi Muyumbwa says the commission will assess supporting information to classify the rock, adding that even if the rock sits on private land, national interest will take precedence if the rock is found to have historical significance.

As long as it is something of national interest when the Ministry of Lands shows that the land was erroneously given the law provides for compensation or compulsory acquisition of that land harbouring national monuments.

The rock is sited on a private farm about three Kilometers from the monumental Mulungushi Rock of Authority at Mulungushi University and is believed to have been used by leaders of the independence struggle to strategise before addressing freedom fighters at the main Rock of Authority.

Recent revelations that like the main Rock of Authority sitting at Mulungushi University in Kapiri Mposhi district, the Rock on a privately owned land which has been fenced off by a private individual, holds historic significance to the liberation struggle of Zambia has attracted both public and government interest wondering why the rock has not been documented and declared as a national monument.

But in an interview Mr Muyumbwa says there is a need for supporting information and proof, especially from freedom fighters and those who could have information to clarify and corroborate the new information about the rock to come forward.

He added that the Commission depends on information from members of the public about sites they feel should be declared heritages.

Meanwhile, the initial owner of the farm harbouring the rock believed to have been forgotten in the historic records of the country has availed land acquisition records dating as far back as 1966.

Mr Rotson Musweu, 79, says he bought off 746 hectares of land previously owned by Tobacco Boards of Zambia in 1966 before subdividing it for sale in 1988.

Updating both Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Chairman, Brilliant Munyeke and District Commissioner Francis Hasalama who visited the area on a fact finding mission, Mr Musweu wondered why it has taken this long for the country to realize that the rock in his farm held historic significance maintaining that the only Rock of Authority is the one documented at Mulungushi University.

” If you have attended the Mulungushi University graduation ceremony that is the rock…this one in my farm nobody even knew about it as a youth and the time I became a man I didn’t know that there were two rocks of authority, there was only one,” Mr Musweu said.

But Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner, Francis Hasalama stated that the rock in question was used for leaders of the freedom struggle to strategise before meeting the larger membership at the now documented Mulungushi Rock of Authority at Mulungushi University.

Meanwhile, Kapiri Mposhi Town Council Chairman Brilliant Munyeke has clarified that the documented Mulungushi Rock of authority has not been sold as earlier reported.

Eddie Black releases new single, “Catherine” a beautiful tribute to his late mother

Eddie Black was born Nathaniel Edward Bangira Nchemba on April 29th, 1993, in Itezhi-Tezhi, a small town in the southern province where his mother Catherine Mutinta Nchemba worked as a nurse at the local hospital. “After some time, we moved to Lusaka, after my mum passed on, I moved in with my grandparents. My grandma is like my best friend, she is my biggest supporter!” He remembers his first award nomination in 2012 when he was nominated for the Zambian Born and Bred Awards. “My grandma took me to the salon to get my hair done and she made sure I looked nice for the award show.”
His love for hip-hop began when he was around the age of eight, “I used to listen to rap music from my uncle we grew up together and he used to listen to a lot of rap music. He had this Walkman and tapes and CDs of Ludacris and Ja Rule that he would let me listen to, that’s how I started rapping. The beauty of him making me listen to the content was that he would censor it for me, for example the song Move by Ludacris… my version was ‘move GIRL get out the way.’ That’s how I got into rap, and I’ve been rapping ever since.”
Eddie Black first appeared on the Zambian music scene in 2011 when he released What’s the Name of the Game after being discovered by Erasto. Later that same year he began working with renowned producer and now longtime collaborator Peezey Cables and launched a smash hit single Bangumfweko.
The recording studio has always been sanctuary for Eddie, “I think it’s my happy place, where I find peace because there’s so much chaos out there. When I’m in the studio, I feel at home… I am happiest when I am making music.” His process in the studio has slowly evolved, Eddie shares, “there was a time when I was inspired by other artists I knew the whole College Dropout album by Kanye West, and Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 by Young Jeezy. I would gather all this content right and I spent every day writing lyrics, based on what I knew.”
That all changed a few years ago, Eddie remembers, “after I watched the Jay-Z documentary Fade to Black things shifted. I saw Jay’s process, he was in Timberland’s studio, and they were making Dirt off Your Shoulders and Timbo says, ‘oh, this guy has like 20 to 30 raps in his head, and he just goes in the studio and starts rapping.’ That inspired me and I wanted to do that too and I prayed to God about it, asking him to help me do that too. I said to God, ‘if Jay Z can do it, I believe you’re bigger than Jay Z and you can help me do it too.’ From that point on I got to a place where I can go in the studio and find a beat that I like and just start rapping without writing down any content.”
2016 was a pivotal year for Eddie Black, caught in a bad place he was making music, but he wasn’t happy, and he was searching for something real. It was then that he turned to God and became a Born-Again Christian, “I began listening to pastors on YouTube. This one morning on the 16th of September, I was listening to Billy Graham on YouTube, and he mentioned something about the value of a soul. He said a soul is eternal, your soul never dies… your body can die but your soul never dies. Only you have a choice to decide where your soul lives after you have left earth, either heaven or hell.”  That was when Eddie decided to give his life to Christ and immediately took down all the music that he had done before he found Christ.
Unlearning what he knew was not an easy journey, but he credits it with helping him become the man and artist he is today. Eddie happily shares, “Being a Christian has really shaped the music that I’m making today because it’s supposed to be based on what I’ve learned and also to help other people learn about this path that I’m walking on now.”
When asked if at any point along that journey especially when taking down his music he had any fears of losing what he had worked so hard for. Eddie proudly responds, “those thoughts will come to your mind but then you get to a place where you know that God has got you. It is no longer about whether you have the hottest song, it’s about what does God want me to do? I believe that he really wanted me to let go of this person that was broken and heal.  It took time to put out new music because music is a spiritual thing, t’s something that comes from equilibrium and you’re sharing your life with others. I don’t want to put out music that does more harm than good.”
His current single out now is Catherine a beautiful tribute to his late mother and it features Peezey Cables. The song was produced by Peezey Cables at Mangishi Audio Studios, formerly Helium Prime Media. Eddie shares that the song is special to him because he wrote it for his late mother. Another collaboration with hit producer Peezey Cables, the process of making the song was organic. Eddie explains “After I created my first single Mystery man, I told him the next song was going to be about my mother. Peezey created the hook, he is an amazing writer, and he comes up with these beautiful lyrics. Peezey made the beat in my absence because he understands my sound and then he asked me what my mum’s name was and it took off from there.”
As for what’s next for Eddie Black, he has the idea of releasing an album with a good slow roll out. Likening it to a restaurant, he wants his audience to enjoy his work like a multi-course meal, releasing a few singles to build up to the album. He laughs, “you can expect a few more singles and videos before the full album drops.” You can listen to the melodic sweet sounds of Catherine, out now on Mvesesani.com which is a Zambian Music platform that supports local artists directly, it is also available all major streaming platforms.

Mutati says that Government is in the process of establishing specialised training for mining sector

9

The Ministry of Technology and Science is in the process of establishing specialised training institutions to offer skills courses critical to the mining sector.

Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati said the training institutions will be established in two mining provinces of Copperbelt and North-Western.

Mr Mutati said specialised skills are critical in reaching the three million metric tonnes copper production that government is targeting in ten years.

He said government will work with the mining companies in identifying skills that are relevant to the mining sector.

” The ministry together with TEVETA, will sit with yourselves to understand critical skills needed for us to reach three million metric tonnes of copper in ten years”, Mr Mutati said

Mr Mutati was speaking yesterday at Barrick Lumwana Mine in Kalumbila district during a meeting with mine management.

Mr Mutati said the ministry wants to help youths get relevant skills, adding that this will help bridge the skills gap in the mining sector.

” As mining gets bigger, we need to prepare our youths with relevant skills needed by the mines,” he said.

Mr Mutati said this will help address the issue of bringing in expatriates to do jobs that can be done by Zambians.

Meanwhile, Mr Mutati asked the mine to partner with Mwinilunga Trades Training Institute to undertake the desk making initiative.

He said the institution will provide the facility and staff while the mine can support the initiative with waste wood.

” This will deal with the issue of shortage of desks in the province, Mwinilunga can supply to Ikelenge as well. We don’t want to be importing desks from outside when we can make them in our institutions”, Mr Mutati said.

Barrick Lumwana Mine Acting General Manager, Abraham Musonda commended government’s move, saying this is critical for sustaining the country’s skills

Mr Musonda said there is need to provide opportunities for the youths once they are trained.

“This is a positive move that we would want to be part of, but we need to table it with the board. We will communicate the decision that will be made,” he said.

And North-Western Province Minister, Robert Lihefu commended the mine for its Corporate Social Responsibility activities but asked them to double their efforts.

“Lumwana mine is doing well in CSR in their catchment area, but they should double their efforts, we want to see more activities from them”, Mr Lihefu said.

He said the host communities should feel the impact of having a mine in their area.

Zambia has witnessed the discovery of mineral deposits in almost all districts-Mpundu

6

Government has called for the need to develop a comprehensive mineral resources development policy which will push the country to benefit from its mineral deposits.

Speaking when he officially opened the Mines and Mineral Consultative Meeting in Kasama, Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Bernard Mpundu noted that the country has witnessed the discovery of mineral deposits in almost all districts which Zambians must benefit from.

Mr. Mpundu said government through the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has also recognized the need to maximize the benefits from the exploitation of identified mineral resources.

The Permanent Secretary pointed out that the emergence of electric vehicles on the market presents an opportunity for the country to benefit from its mineral resources.

He added that the aspiration of government to increase copper production to three million metric tons per annum in the next 10 years will also provide an opportunity for investment in the mining sector.

Mr. Mpundu stated the country has learnt lessons from the mineral resources development policy of 2013 which was under implementation, including the low participation of Zambians across the mineral value chain.

‘It also had low or lack of value addition, illegal mining and trade in gold, manganese among others, informal, illegal and sustainable artisanal and small scale mining” he said.

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Senior Planner Edward Shabani, indicated that the mining industry is facing challenges among them the lack of serious investment, accountability, and transparency about how much is extracted.

He said the country has since embarked on a consultative process with stakeholders to develop a new minerals policy which will be in line with the aspiration of both the country and the African continent.

He also noted that the mining sector does not have adequate information about what the country has in terms of mineral wealth because it is not fully mapped.

“Growing up we only knew that Copperbelt was the only mining area, we do not know fully what sits in Muchinga and Northern.” He said.

Mr. Shabani further explained that the mining industry would love to see Zambians participate in the mineral value chain.

Meanwhile, the traditional leaders who were represented by a researcher, Andrew Njovu during the meeting submitted that the new policy should compel foreign investors to undertake Corporate Social Responsibility.

Mr. Njobvu said traditional leaders want to ensure that the issuance of mining licenses should be decentralized, adding that mining investors should first discuss with the grassroots before being issued with the licenses.

Early childhood learning key in shaping the future-Kasanda

Minister of Information and Media, Chushi Kasanda says early childhood education is critical in shaping the future of children.

Ms Kasanda who is also Chief Government Spokesperson noted that children will only contribute meaningfully to the development of the country in their adulthood life if they receive quality education at an early stage in life.

She said the government recognises the importance education plays in the life of an individual hence its decision to introduce free education.

Ms Kasanda said this when she flagged off the Amy Ladies Association of Zambia Fundraising Walk at Central Mall in Kabulonga.

The fundraising walk is aimed at raising funds to complete the construction of a nursery school in Arakan Barracks.

Ms Kasanda said the gesture demonstrated by the Army Ladies Association of Zambia to raise funds for the completion of the construction of a nursery school is gratifying.

She expressed optimism that once completed children will receive quality education to better their future.

Ms Kasanda stressed that education is a key equaliser and an important inheritance that every parent should endeavor to provide for the children.

The Minister has since commended the association for supplementing government efforts in providing quality education to children at an early stage as it is in line with the new dawn administrations education policy.

“I must say, this is commendable and in line with our belief and policy as a government that every child must be given a chance and an opportunity to obtain an education.”

Ms Kasanda emphasised that every child despite their socioeconomic background must have access to quality education if they are to grow into responsible adults and useful citizens.

Speaking earlier at the same event, Army Ladies Association of Zambia Patron, Stella Alibuzwi says the school project requires over three hundred thousand kwacha for the facility to be completed.

Mrs Alibuzwi informed the Minister of Information and Media that the funds to be raised from the fundraising walk will go towards completing the remaining works which include, doors and window installation, plumbing, plastering and electrical installation.

She further highlighted that the association decided to embark on the school project after noticing the need for an early childhood facility in the barracks.

Government commended for expanding Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Safeguarding Young People (SYP) Regional Coordinator, Renata Tallarico, has commended government for expanding Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) for in and out of schools adolescents.

Dr. Tallarico says the political will by the government to empower adolescents and young people aged 10-12 with information aimed at protecting them from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV, early and unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, early marriages and other harmful cultural practices was unprecedented.

Dr. Tallarico said this in Kabwe when the delegation from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the Embassy of the Royal Netherlands paid courtesy a call on the Acting Provincial Health Director, Alexander Kawimbe.

She observed that Zambia as a country has shown more sustaining results because of the commitment from government to enhance youth participation in CSE.

“We really want to thank the government of Zambia, because as much as resources may be made available and as much as technical assistance may be available from donors, the commitment of government really makes a difference,” Dr. Tallarico said.

She has revealed that the programme in Zambia has established a good track record for developing evidence based policies and improving integrated delivery of youth friendly services.

Meanwhile, the Embassy of the Royal Netherlands Policy Officer for Sexual Reproductive Health Rights and HIV/AIDS, Fatima Aly, said she is impressed with the preliminary strides and impact being made by the SYP programme.

Dr. Aly said she noted with satisfaction at the successes the programme has registered, adding that SDC is committed to ensure that more young people are reached and transformed.

“I joined the SYP last year and was just invited to come and see how the programme here is progressing and I can say it’s impressive,” Dr. Aly said.

And Acting Central Province Health Director (PHD), Alexander Kawimbe, has commended the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the embassy of the Royal Netherlands for the support being rendered to the Zambian people.

Dr. Kawimbe said through the SYP programme, young people are able to meet, discuss and access youth friendly health services in an environment that is conducive for them.

“How we bring up children matters a lot to their sexual reproductive health and this will impact them for the rest of their lives. So, it’s good that we have combined education and health care together because young people need to understand things about their own health,” Dr. Kawimbe said.

The team was scheduled to visit Mahatma Gandhi Clinic and Kalonga Secondary School before proceeding to Kapiri Mposhi District where outreach services for youths are offered.

Government is working hard to close the gap that limits access to justice for poor people

5

Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe says government is working hard to close the gap that limits access to justice for poor people in the country.

Mr. Haimbe says access to justice for all citizens is important as it accords an opportunity of fair legal representation before the courts.

Mr Haimbe said access to justice for all, is also key in dismissing the notion that justice in Zambia was for rich people.

Mr. Haimbe said this in Mazabuka after a familiarization tour of ‘Access to Justice Programs’ that is currently operating in the district.

He observed that more work is needed to be done especially in correctional facilities which are overcrowded.

Mr. Haimbe noted that Mazabuka Correctional Facility has a capacity of 125 people but was currently holding 308, including juveniles.

He acknowledged the need to decongest the facility which he said is being done through the legal desks embedded in the facility and the Legal Services Unit which is providing legal services.

“Being in conflict with the law can happen to any of us but it does not take away the fact that we are human and need to be respected in that regard,” he said.

And Mazabuka District Commissioner Oliver Mulomba said some cases before the courts were dragging because the Magistrates initially assigned to them, had been transferred to other districts.

Mr. Mulomba appealed to the Minister to look into the matter and ensure delayed cases are disposed of fast.

He listed cattle rusting and defilement as the most common offences in the district.

Meanwhile, Mazabuka District Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Ushimanga appealed to the Justice Minister to send more lawyers to the Legal Services Unit, which currently has only two.

She said the district has no lawyers other than the two at the Legal Services Unit, while the rest came from other towns to represent clients.

“Without legal aid, we would be stuck, as Mazabuka has no lawyers. We need more lawyers to add to the two that we already have. As for

Magistrates, the district only has four,” she said.

And GIZ Country Director Helmut Hauschild said Zambians’ constitutional right to access justice faces a lot of constraints, which borders on infrastructure and manpower.

“There are many cases waiting to be dealt with and you as the Judiciary are overworked. GIZ is here to support you in this endeavour to make this constitutional right, a reality,” he said.

The Justice Minister is set to also visit Choma and Livingstone District to familiarize himself with the operations of ‘Access to Justice’ programs that are supported by GIZ and the European Union.

Judges no longer Enjoy Security of Tenure

10

By Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba

Security of Tenure is a constitutional or legal guarantee that an office-holder cannot be removed from office except in exceptional and specified circumstances.

The premise behind in guaranteeing security of tenure is to reinforce the judiciary’s role as an independent branch of Government.

This promotes both internal and external judicial independence by limiting interference either the Executive or the chief judicial officer to determine the conditions or terms of appointment or removal of judicial officers.
In a period of two weeks, President Hakainde Hichilema has removed two judges from the bench.

Many are asking how possible or easy it has become under President Hichilema to remove Judges, without a tribunal, that are well-known to enjoy Security of Tenure and their offices are deemed insulated from these political machinations.

Sadly, and for whatever reason, in the 2016 Constitution, the Security of Tenure was diluted by the introduction of a clause that provides for the easy removal of a Judge by a mere complaint to or investigations by the Judicial Complaints Commission and without need or cause for a Tribunal!

Article 144; “the removal of a Judge may be initiated by the Judicial Complaints Commission or by a complaint made to the Judicial Complaints Commission or grounds based on Article 143”.

As seen above, this law will be abused by Presidents that can target judges they deem unfriendly or unfavourable to their Administration.

This is so especially that the Judicial Complaints Commission is now directly under the administration of State House.

Gazette Notice No. 1123 of 2021 formally put the ACC, the newly created Anti Financial and Economics Crimes Commission, Office of the Public Protector and Judicial Complaints Commission under State House among other institutions that fall directly under the Office of President.

This is the death of Security of Tenure for the Judiciary as we know it!

Kafulafuta Water Supply Improvement Project Manager,  Paul Bilima  has informed stakeholders that works on the Kafulafuta Dam in Masaiti district on the Copperbelt will resume once discussions with the Ministry of Finance are concluded.

Mr Biilima said plans to complete the works at the US$499 million US dollars dam are underway as Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company has engaged government over the completion of remaining works.

The Kafulafuta water supply improvement project construction started in 2018 and was scheduled for completion in 2020 but because of  lack of funds works have stalled.

ZANIS reports that works at Kafulafuta dam stands at 80 per cent complete and China National Complete Engineering is the contractor for the project.

“Kafubu Water and Sanitaion company management are still discussing with government under the Ministry of Finance on when the works at the stalled project will resume. It will take 12 months to complete.” Mr Bilima said.

Mr. Bilima said the Kafulafuta dam is earmarked to improve water supply to over one million residents in Ndola, Luanshya , Mpongwe and Masaiti districts.

Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) and several other companies that visited the site also planted  over 50 Mahogany trees  around the dam ahead of the World Environmental Day on June 5.

ZEMA Ndola District Principal Inspector, Sampa Chella said the team planted the trees around the dam to protect it from soil erosion once operational.

Ms. Chella said the trees will also provide shelter for wildlife and also decrease runoff of pollutants into the water which is line with the 2022 World Environmental day theme “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”

Chipolopolo Defeat Hits Asanovic

11

Friday’s loss against Cote d’Ivoire has left Chipolopolo coach Aljosa Asanovic very disappointed.

Chipolopolo kicked off the battle to redeem themselves from three successive AFCON flops with a heavy setback when they lost 3-1 away to Cote d’Ivoire in Yamoussoukro.

The result saw Chipolopolo slump to the bottom of Group H while Cote d’Ivoire took top spot with five games left in which the lone team from Group H will join the latter at the tournament they will host from June 23 to July 23, 2023.

“My team wasn’t looking very well because we lost concentration sometimes in the game because Ivory Coast controlled the game well,” Asanovic said.

The floodgates opened in the 67th minute through Serge Aurier, Christian Kouame added goal number two in the 76th minute and Ibrahima Sangare scored the final goal in the 89th minute.

Patson Daka then scored Zambia’s consolation goal in stoppage time.

“But anyway, we will continue working hard me and my team. We know our target but tonight we did not show our quality,” Asanovic said.

“But you know, I am very disappointed with the reaction from my boys but sometimes when you play against the Ivory Coast you can think you have a chance but tonight we did not concentrate.”

Chipolopolo now head back to Lusaka where they host Comoros ion Tuesday at National Heroes Stadium.

Comoros are second after beating third paced Lesotho 2-0 at home on Friday afternoon.

Narrow Escape

11

Excerpt from Confessions of a Doctor

This incident happened at Ndola Central Hospital, sometime in 1992. I received a summon to attend Court as a witness in a Criminal abortion case. Doctors are often required to give evidence in such cases.

On the day Court was sitting, I could not avail myself, as I ended up doing an emergency Caesarian Section. The next day, I was doing my Gynae Clinic when two Police men were sent to arrest me for what they called “Contempt of Court” . I tried to explain to them why I could not attend Court but they were not having any of that. They told me, they were just following Magistrate’s orders. They wanted to hand cuff me right in the Consulting room with 30 or so of my Patients in the line outside. I begged them that we could just walk to Court without hand cuffs, they reluctantly agreed and off we went.

I must admit, till I entered the Court, I did not think there was anything serious. I was dead wrong. The Magistrate was fuming , calling me pompous for missing his Court session. I tried to explain that I had to choose between Court and saving two lives. He went on shouting at me to respect the Court more. Sentence: “One month imprisonment” , he pronounced. I was shocked, I did not know I had stepped on a live wire! It was the first time , I was hearing of “contempt of court”. They never taught this one in Medical school!

Next, the Police were ordered to take me to Prison and just before they whisked me , the Magistrate turned to me and told me that I could pay a fine if I had a K100 on me. No going home.I was to pay there and then or go to Prison. Now K100 at that time was big money, fortunately I had a K 100 note in my pocket. I promptly paid and was let free.

Karma has his way! Next morning I was reviewing my post-operative patients and who do I see? The Magistrate himself visiting the very woman I had done a Caesarian Section on the previous day. It turned out it was his sister! He called me to the side and started apologizing for his words in Court. I told him, it was fine, I had done my duty and there was no need to apologize. Truth be told though, he appeared like a chicken wet from rain!
