Kabuswe reiterates Zambia’s commitment to revamp mining sector

17

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, has reiterated the government’s commitment to reviving the mining sector in Zambia and make it responsive to the needs of the country.

Mr. Kabuswe says Zambia is a major player in the mining sector in Africa hence the need to put in place effective policy measures that will make the industry viable and contribute positively to the country’s economic agenda.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Cape Town, South Africa yesterday that this is why the government will continue to interact with other players in the industry to learn and to woo more investment that will benefit the country.

He said the 2022 investing in African Mining Indaba, which will be held in South Africa from 10 to 12 May 2022, is one of the many platforms that Zambia intends to use to attract investment to the country’s mining industry.

The minister added that such forums give Zambia an opportunity to market itself and substantiate why investors should consider investing in the country.

“You know that Zambia is the major player in the mining sector not just in Africa but the world as a whole. This is why we will continue interacting with other players in the industry in order to showcase our potential and why we should be a preferred investment destination,” he said.

Mr. Kabuswe cited that the mining indaba is one of the biggest mining events that present enormous opportunity for the sector in Africa to engage and devise mechanisms of improving for the benefit of their people.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kabuswe has expressed optimism that the current reforms being undertaken by the new dawn administration to improve the mining sector would attract more investment through the indaba.

He said having President Hakainde Hichilema as one of the main speakers at the indaba will put Zambia in a more advantageous position.

“As you know the stance that the new dawn administration has taken to revamp the mining sector and make it more viable, this is the platform that will help us get more investors and having President Hichilema as one of the main speakers will put us in a good position to sell our country to the world,” he added.

The Mines Minister is participating in the ministerial symposium in Cape Town and is expected to give a presentation on global solutions for the regional challenges and the next steps forward.

Zambia is participating in the 2022 Investing in Africa Mining indaba that has attracted three heads of state, heads of governments, captains of the mining industry and other global leaders.

President Hichilema is expected to arrive in South Africa today and participate in the indaba as one of the main speakers.

New dawn government has removed politics from church- Matambo

Copperbelt Province Minister, Elisha Matambo, says the government, under the stewardship of President Hakainde Hichilema, has restored sanity to the church.

And Mr. Matambo has assured that government will not interfere with the freedom of worship but allow the church to conduct its prophetic and moral guidance role freely.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Matambo noted that under the previous regime, the church saw the rise in individual groupings which brought about divisions in the Christian community in Zambia.

He said President Hichilema’s administration has made sure that the church remains focused on its role through the discouragement of unnecessary individual groups.

He said this last evening after witnessing the distribution of food items to 100 vulnerable households by the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church in Ndola.

“We will not interfere with the operations of the church as government. What will be sad is to see anyone allowing politicians to bring politics back,” he said.

He added that it is President Hichilema’s desire to give the church the place it deserves because he realises its importance in shaping morality in society.

And ECG National Pastor, Adamson Nkhoma thanked government under President Hichilema for the prevailing free operating environment.

Pastor Nkhoma said government has demonstrated its willingness to work with the church in ensuring that morality is upheld in society.

He disclosed that the church has spent K50, 000 to ensure that the 100 vulnerable households are empowered with food items.

Over 2.47 million people fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in Zambia

1

Zambia has continued to record a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases recorded every day across the country.

In the last 24 hours, 27 new cases were recorded out of 1,268 tests conducted.

The Ministry of Health, in its daily Covid-19 update, disclosed that six new cases were recorded in Lusaka, five in Central, Six in Copperbelt, four in Luapula, two in North-Western and four in Southern Provinces.

The Ministry also disclosed that 96 recoveries were recorded in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries since the pandemic broke out in Zambia in March 2020, to 315,672.

2,479,135 people have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19. A total of 1,403,325 have received their first dose and 120,239 have received their booster shot cumulatively.

And 267,532 children between the ages of 12 and 17 have received their first dose while 40,988 have received their second dose.

There was no Covid-19 death recorded in the last 24 hours. Since March 2020, a total of 3,982 deaths have been recorded in Zambia.

Of these deaths, 2,855 were as a result of confirmed Covid-19 cases while 1,127 were Covid-19 associated deaths.

Meanwhile, Over 47,000 Luanshya residents earmarked for Covid-19 vaccination

Luanshya, May 8, 2002, ZANIS—Luanshya district has targeted to vaccinate 47,077 people against Covid-19 in ten days in order to attain the 70 percent threshold of the eligible population.

Luanshya District Commissioner, Oncemore Ng’onomo, has disclosed that the district was far from attaining the 70 percent safety zone and has so far vaccinated only 34 percent of the total population.

Mr. Ng’onomo said this during a stakeholders’ meeting on the relaunch of the forthcoming district new push to drive the 2022 Covid-19 vaccination campaign.

“As we relaunch the vaccination drive campaign, we should know that as Luanshya district, we are still far away from being in a safety zone and reaching the targeted threshold of 70 percent population vaccination,” he said.

He said there was therefore a need for all stakeholders to strive to attain the target population to protect people from the spread of the Covid-19.

“This can be attainable if we all work together,” Mr. Ng’onomo said.

He explained that the government was concerned with the safety and health of its citizens hence the relaunch of the vaccination campaign.

Mr. Ng’onomo said the relaunch aims at promoting the health of the productive population by reaching all citizens.

He added that the safety and health of citizens was cardinal in attaining economic growth.

He has since called on all stakeholders to support and accept the Covid-19 vaccination campaign relaunch.

“I urged all eligible residents above the age of 12 years to turn up in numbers and receive the Covid-19 vaccination to protect the nation from the disease burden. Further I want to encourage you not to listen to myths and misconceptions surrounding the Covid-19 vaccination as it is well intended just like any other vaccinations like polio and others,” he added.

At the same occasion, Luanshya District Medical Director, John Kamalamba, attributed the poor turn out for Covid-19 vaccination to non-acceptance of the vaccination by the many people.

Dr. Kamalamba explained that the last vaccination campaign in Luanshya was launched in April last year but exactly a year down the line, only 34 percent of the population has been vaccinated.

He said this has left a deficit of 36 percent to meet the targeted threshold.

He further disclosed that out of 91,558 total eligible population, only 44,450 had been vaccinated to date, leaving a shortfall of 47,077 people targeted to be vaccinated in the next campaign.

Dr. Kamalamba said his office would work with the Ministry of Information and Media through the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) to create awareness of the vaccination campaign prior to the launch.

Government has relaunched the Covid-19 vaccination campaign and the vaccination exercise will commence on 14th and end on 24th May, 2022.

The meeting was attended by key government departments, civil society, the church and representatives from markets and bus stations.

President Hichilema at the Indaba for 4 days is not a good way of managing the his time

34

By Bowman Lusambo

We are told by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation that President Hakainde Hichilema will spend four days in Cape Town, South Africa attending the Africa Mining Indaba.

The Head of State is due to address the gathering on Monday at 09:00 Hrs.

As someone one who attended the Indaba as Copperbelt Minister on a number of occasions, I wish to place it on record that having an entire President at the Indaba for four days is not particularly a good way of managing the President’s time.

The Indaba is a great event for portfolio Ministers and Directors and other technolocracts. At the Indaba, it would be foolish for a President to commit to anything without subjecting the issue to a Cabinet resolution. President Hichilema should quickly learn that government does not operate quite like a limited Company. If he uses the Cape Town event to over promise (like he always does) his imperialist friends who are after our mining assets, he will find difficulties in implementing those promises because government operates on a different framework.

From my experience, As important as the Mining Indaba is to mining development in Africa and across the world, having a President at this event for four days which is meant for Ministers at best is demeaning the office Mr. Hichilema occupies.
For a man who campaigned heavily on prudent utilization of public resources, spending four days in a very expensive city does not show frugality.

The key question should be, what will President Hichilema be left to do in Cape Town after he is done with his Key Note speech by midday on Monday?

A bit of sight seeing on the Table Mountain? A tour of Robben Island perhaps?

Cape Town is a hugely tempting City especially if one’s stay there is being paid for by the tax payer but we should point out that keeping the President and his entourage in the Mother City will cost the treasury a fortune.

For a man who recently took a near one week break from home to stay at his Kalomo farm, President Hichilema appears to be a man for the soft life. His laissez-afire attitude towards work is unmatched.

I am not sure Zambians voted for a President who will be going on vacations every two weeks with just 10 months into his administration. We call on President Hichilema to immediately cut his Cape Town vacation immediately he is done with his Key Note Address and return to Lusaka.

Here at home, President Hichilema has a mountain of problems requiring his full attention and sight seeing should not be a priority for a man who has not even delivered a single election campaign promise, 10 months into office.

President Hichilema in South Africa for mining indaba

The plane carrying President Hichilema touched down at Cape Town International airport at 17:20 hours.

He was welcomed at the airport by Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, senior staff from the Zambian embassy in South Africa and officials from the South African government.

The President is accompanied by Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane among other officials.

President Hichilema is among the key speakers and is expected to give his keynote address to the indaba tomorrow.

The indaba is being held after two years of absence due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Various dignitaries have started arriving for the Indaba, which is the most attended and largest mining conference in Africa.

Earlier, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe said the 2022 investing in African Mining Indaba, will be one of the many platforms that Zambia intends to use to attract investment to the country’s mining industry.

Mr. Kabuswe said such forums give Zambia an opportunity to market itself and substantiate why investors should consider investing in the country.

“You know that Zambia is the major player in the mining sector not just in Africa but the world as a whole. This is why we will continue interacting with other players in the industry in order to show case our potential and why we should be a preferred investment destination,” he said.

Ngonga Brace Confirms Nkana’s Fourth Place Finish

Nkana beat demoted Lusaka Dynamos 2-1 at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe to finish fourth to put to rest what has been a see-saw 2021/2022 season for the record 13-time Zambian champions.

Striker Alex Ngonga scored a brace in the 11th and 84th minute to cancel out Harry Kayula’s 75th minute equalizer for Dynamos.

Ngonga ended his season on 11 goals, five behind the 2021/2022 Golden Boot winner Ricky Banda of Red Arrows.

His brace also saw him end a four month drought since converting a penalty in a 1-0 home win over Kabwe Warriors on January 27.

Meanwhile, this seasons’ top gun Banda was in action just across the road from Nkana Stadium at Arthur Davies where Arrows coronation was held at the end of their 3-1 away victory over Indeni.

Fred Tshimenga put the champions ahead in the 7th minute but Indeni pulled one back in the 27th minute through Emmanuel Kabole.

Banda scored his 16th goal of the season in the 48th minute and George Mendu completed the scoring on the hour mark.

Arrows ended the season on 70 points, seven points ahead of outgoing champions Zesco who beat Zanaco 1-0 thanks to an Adrian Chama goal scored on the stroke of halftime.

Third placed Green Eagles drew 0-0 with Forest Rangers to end the season on 57 points, five points more than Nkana.

Meanwhile, the top four now wait to know their continental fate with speculation that Zambia has lost two slots and would only see Red Arrows and Zesco United play in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.

Parents and school administrators urged to exercise caution as they ferry Children back to School

THE Zambian Roads & Highway Safety Group (ZRHSG) is urging parents and school administrators to exercise maximum caution and care in their usage of Zambian roads these coming few days as they ferry pupils from home to their respective schools in readiness for the school new term.

The Zambian Roads and Highway Safety Group has noted with dismay that most of the Zambian highways are not fit and safe for long distance travel as they are riddled with potholes, un even surfaces and have poor or no road markings.

This makes them a challenge to drive on especially when there is a heavy built up of traffic due to schools re-opening.

The Group calls on parents driving their children to school to ensure a more competent and skilled driver is the one assigned the task and that the vehicles being used are well maintained and fit for the journey.

The Group is also urging school administrations to ensure their hired buses are road worthy and the drivers qualified to drive on Zambian highways.

The Group wishes a safe journey to all pupils.

The Group further notes that there are no visible efforts by the Government through their agents the Road Development Agency (RDA) among others to mend the damaged roads or built new routes.

“The Great North Road from Chisamba to Ndola is nearly impassable while the Mumbwa-Kaoma and Kaoma to Mongu stretch on the Great West Road is challenging. Others like the Mazabuka – Choma stretch, Kapiri – Nakonde stretches require patience and a good vehicle to drive on,” says Group Admin Mthoniswa Banda.

The Group has noted that despite motorists and advocacy road safety groups reporting that the stretch on the Great North Road between Chisamba and Ndola being badly damaged and ridden with dangerous ridges that make them un safe for use as a highway and busy road, the Road Development Agency (RDA) and the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) have not moved on site to remedy the situation.

The Group also notes that several critical roads throughout the country have remained un safe and prone to accidents without these agencies, the RDA, NRFA, moving on site to remedy the situation.

The Group hopes the New Dawn Government will revise the way roads are built and maintained and review the day to day management of tolled busy roads.

FAZ unveils over K200m budget for 2022

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has disclosed its budget of more than K200 million for the year 2022.

And an international auditing company, AMG Global, has passed the FAZ books of accounts during a report from the auditors.

ZANIS reports that speaking when he presented the budget, Football House Head of Finance, Owens Buntele, said the projected expenditure for 2022 was K214 million.

He said the bulk of the support will come from FIFA, which will provide 21 percent of the support while the KoPa brand will provide the next discernible source of income.

Buntele said FAZ targeted to raise K48 million from KoPa merchandise sales that hopefully could capture one percent of the Zambian population.

He said the other support was expected to come from sponsors such as SuperSport, mobile network provider MTN, ABSA Bank, TopStar and UEFA.

Buntele disclosed that the projected surplus will amount to K1.3 million.

He also announced that FAZ will aggressively pursue other income generating avenues in the next financial year.

Buntele said part of the targeted areas of expenditure are 22 percent for infrastructure, 15 percent lower leagues, 11 percent Zambia Premier League and 10 percent senior men’s national team.

In Crosshairs … On President Hakainde Hichilema’s Dalliance with America

By Dr Canisius BANDA Development Activist
________________
ZAMBIA is now on the edge of a precipice of instability. You see, Zambia’s foreign policy has come off its wheels. It is now on the wrong path. Gradually, and firmly, we seem to be drifting away from our much venerated, almost immutable non-aligned stance. As seen by keen global geopolitical watchers, by allowing an office of AFRICOM to be set up on Zambia’s soil, Zambia is now taking SIDES.

Laying the foundation of the foreign policy of the Africans, Kwame NKRUMAH said: ‘We must neither look East nor West. We must look FORWARD.’ Of course, Hakainde wasn’t there. He missed this lesson. It used to be Zambia FORWARD. But now it seems to be Zambia WEST. It was okay, but what happened?

The foreign policy of the United States of AMERICA is very clear. It put America first and states that America should be the most powerful nation in the world, and no stone should be left unturned in pursuit of this goal and to spread, enhance/further and safeguard its interests. And to secure its INTERESTS, America uses various methods which include, but are not limited to, cultural, political, social and military. AFRICOM is the military wing of the United States of AMERICA aimed at securing these interests of hers through military means on the African continent. Primarily, AFRICOM is not for the benefit of Zambia.

Ambrose LUFUMA, Zambia’s defence minister’s knowledge of this seems parochially dangerous. His recent press statement dated 2 May 2022, arguing in defence of setting up the office of AFRICOM on Zambia’s soil was thoroughly disappointing, un-nationalistic, subservient and bordered on a betrayal of Zambia’s own interests.

The purpose of AFRICOM is as follows: ‘The U.S. Africa Command, with partners, counters transnational threats and malign actors, strengthens security forces, and responds to crises in order to advance U.S. NATIONAL INTERESTS and promote regional security, stability, and prosperity.’

Note that, loosely put, this is akin to Zambia joining NATO. It is similar to opening an office for disorder, for geopolitical chaos. What boggles the mind is why Zambia, after years of peace and quiet, a statutory Christian nation, is now courting disquiet and disaster. AFRICOM, either as an office, barracks or a base MUST not be on Zambia’s soil. PERIOD. Placing AFRICOM’s office on Zambia’s land firmly places Zambia in the crosshairs of all of America’s enemies, and they are not only many but they are powerful as well.

‘We should also be aware that much of the world regards Washington as a terrorist regime,’ cautions Noam CHOMSKY, a renowned public intellectual in his book entitled INTERVENTIONS.

‘Where are you from?’ That was Patrice LUMUMBA, a smile on his face.

‘Zambia,’I said.

Quickly, the smile vanished from his face, in its place was a contortion of disgust, fury and pain.
Refusing to shake my hand, he turned away from me, the way one would from the PLAGUE.
‘How many Zambians have read that book you carry?’ That was Nelson MANDELA, an epitome of freedom but a man that America had, for years, considered a terrorist.

I carried the book, ‘AFRIKA TWASEBANA’ by Simon Mwansa KAPWEPWE. I hang on to it the way human beings hang on to oxygen.
‘I don’t know,’ I honestly answered.

He appeared disappointed, hurt. The others just silently looked at me, their eyes probing, accusing and expectant.

There was Steve BIKO.
There was Thomas SANKARA.
There was Kwame NKHRUMAH.
There was Muammar GADDAFI.
There was Samora MACHEL.
There was Pombe MAGUFULI.
There was Gamal Abdel NASSER.
And many others. I thought I also saw Julia CHIKAMONEKA there.

They all just stared at me, a strong air of sadness pervaded the atmosphere, the occasion clearly sombre and serious, as if their collective dream for the Africans was in peril. To them I seemed to represent TREACHERY, SHAME and FAILURE.
A voice was saying: ‘This is the graveyard of African Heroes, child. It is a treasure trove of freedom, nationalism, sovereignty, identity and Africa’s unity. It is all you need, son. Do NOT look elsewhere for your salvation. Look within you. Use it for your future. It is your armour!’ You see, in everything, the steps we take as individuals, leaders or nations have specific outcomes.

Presently, by opening an office of AFRICOM on its soil, Zambia is not placing itself on the path of peace. It is departing from its required national attitude. Zambia is now in danger of becoming a theatre of war, wars of all types, not war from the liberation of Zambians from the perncious backwardness and poverty, but catastrophic wars between the world’s opposing elephants. Should we maintain this path or national attitude, Zambia’s future is BLEAK indeed.
This dalliance of Hakainde’s with America is going to end badly, it will end in disaster. It will end in regional disunity, domestic pain and tears.

‘You see Canisius, when THESE PEOPLE praise you, get worried. It means that you are not with your people.’ I turned towards the voice. It was Frederick TJ CHILUBA. Respectfully, silently, I nodded.

By opening an office for AFRICOM on Zambia’s soil, Zambia will now firmly be in the crosshairs of America’s enemies. Ipso facto, our NON-ALIGNED status ceases.

This then is how Hakainde HICHILEMA, our own Republican President, has become a national security risk. If the history of America’s military engagement with other nations should inform us about our own future, then a cause/case for grave concern is laid. We must worry.

Zambians must say NO to the presence of AFRICOM on our soil in whatever form. Hakainde HICHILEMA, I have a question for you. As an act of required symbolism by every African, when you went to the Democratic Republic of CONGO, did you lay a wreath of acknowledgement and respect on the grave of Patrice LUMUMBA?

Oh, you didn’t. This is why I have tears in my eyes. And they refuse to be wiped away.

Indeed, aluta continua!

President Hichilema expected to participate in Mining Indaba in South Africa

President Hakainde Hichilema will this week be attending the Mining Indaba scheduled to take place from May 8th to 11th , 2022 in Cape town, South Africa.

Mr. Kabubo noted that the keynote speech will be entitled “A New Dawn for Zambia’s mining sector”.

The Minister said during the event, President Hichilema is also expected to engage both potential and current investors, and other partners to advance conversations relating to efforts to re-establish Zambia as a world class mining destination.

Mr Kakubo stated that the Head of State will also outline to the would-be investors the potential that the Zambian mining sector has to play a catalytic role in promoting industrialisation, job creation and inclusive growth in the country.

He explained that the President is further anticipated to hold bilateral meetings with regional heads of state that will also be in attendance.

The Minster said the Africa Mining Indaba is the world’s largest annual investment event for the mining sector and Africa’s largest gathering for mining operators, investors, governments and service companies.

Mr Kakubo further stated that participation at the event is part of government’s campaign to revitalise the sector as it works to increase production revenues and jobs.

He noted that the 2022 Mining Indaba is being held under the theme: Evolution of Africa Mining: Investing in the Energy Transition, Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) and Economics.”

Mr Kakubo said President Hichilema’s participation presents a great opportunity for Zambia to market her rich mineral resource and investment potential to the international mining community.

He said the President understands the key role that the mining sector will continue to play in accelerating economic growth through harnessing available opportunities.

Mr Kabubo further added that President Hichilema’s participation in the mining Indaba is projected to unlock opportunities for investment, reinforce bilateral relations with other countries within the region.

He said the President will be accompanied by Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane and Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe adding that they are expected to return to Zambia on 11 the of May 2022.

New Dawn administration to work with Church in fostering development– President Hichilema

President Hakainde Hichilema says the New Dawn government in its entirety will work with the Catholic Church in serving the people in various ways to improve their welfare.

Speaking at the Episcopal Consecration of new Bishop for Monze Diocese Reverend Father Raphael Mweempwa at the new Cathedral of the Holy Trinity yesterday, President Hichilema says all churches should be viewed as complementary to government in serving the people rather than competitors.

The Head of State emphasised that his government will work with all religious bodies in serving the people in various ways.

“As a new Dawn government never ever should we view the Catholic Church or any other church as our enemies but as complementary because we serve the same people as churches,” said President Hichilema.

“I ask my government in its entirety to work with the Catholic Church and this goes to those who will come after us not to be in conflict with the church but work with it to foster development,” he added.

The President said it was the duty the government to help the Catholic Church to ensure that some of remaining works at the new cathedral are completed as it was a centre of worship for all the people.

Mr Hichilema who was impressed with the high quality works of the new cathedral pledged the government’s full support to the completion of the new church building.

President Hichilema urged the local authority to urgently attend to challenges of water faced by the Monze Mission Hospital by drilling boreholes using the Constituency Development Funds (CDF).

He noted that the Catholic Church has done tremendous works in the country and needs to be fully supported by the government.

“We need to prioritise water for the Monze Mission Hospital because the money is there….I am not here to issue instructions but to remind the council that some if not all challenges faced by the Catholic Church in providing our people with needed services are addressed by the government,” said Mr. Hichilema.

The President congratulated the newly Ordained Bishop Mweempwa and urged him to offer the needed services not only to the Catholic faithful but to all the people in Monze District.

He expressed hope that the new Bishop Mweempwa would diligently serve the people of Monze with passion like the previous Bishops.

Earlier, Apostolic Nuncio of Malawi and Zambia, Archbishop Gianfranco Gallone who ordained the new Bishop Mweempwa urged him to be a true servant of the Lord and the people.

The Archbishop noted that the calling of Bishop was that of service to all people and advised the new Bishop to strive to be humble, meek and prayerful to avoid pitfalls in course of duty to the Lord.

He further advised the new bishop to seek pray always and be close with priests to lead the truth on the gospel.

BIshop Emeritus RT.Rev.Emilio Patriarca urged the new bishop to be a saint and true shepherd who listens to the voice of God and teach others to follow him.

He further implored the new Bishop to ensure unity among the priests and do everything possible to ensure unity prevails in the entire Catholic Church as well.

” The nedd for you to ensure unity among priest and the church at all times should be a must and therefore, do everything within your power to ensure unity and peace sustained at all times,” said Bishop Patriarca.

And President of the Zambia Conferences of Catholic Bishop Most Reverend, Ignatius Chama thanked the Republican President for attending the event saying it demonstrates the importance he attaches to the catholic church’ s mission to spread the word of God.

The Bishop has since admitted the new Bishop of Monze to the ZCC following his successful consecration.
