Naming of new Mulungushi International Conference Centre building after Kenneth Kaunda opposed

19

An International Events and Planning Expert has advised the Zambian government to drop the naming of the new Mulungushi International Conference Centre building after Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

Mulemwa Moongwa who is Managing Director at MICE Academy said there is need to preserve the rich history of the Mulungushi International Conference Centre by keeping the name on the new building.

The New Mulungushi International Conference now renamed Kenneth Kaunda International Conference Centre is a 24 square meters masterpiece with a 2500-seat conference hall, one 600-seat medium meeting room, one 400-seat multi-function hall and 60-seat group meeting rooms.

The New International conference center also has five VIP rooms, office area, exhibition area, press center, emergency medical center, service area, auxiliary facilities such as parking space.

But Ms. Moongwa said the Kenneth Kaunda’s name is too big for the new building but that government should be looking at setting up a Kenneth Kaunda Museum to keep his legacy.

“A few years ago we named a pool 90 Days Legacy. Because of our procrastination and delays, we had 90 days to pull the mammoth task and pull we did. Last week, that very pool hosted a regional tournament. I can only imagine the conversations that brew when explaining the Genesis of the name. Personally, our inefficiencies led us to work under pressure, by using that name we are forever reminded our faults as a people……with time it’s become like ‘ Zambian Time’ I cringe when I hear adults use it as an excuse for not keeping time.”

“You wonder why people name the children Misozi, Manyando, Mapenzi, a name should not be a constant reminder of the bad, how do you let go of the past and move on?”

She added, “KK’s legacy is one that needs the country to invest in his own Museum.”

“I had heard the naming of the building two months ago, I didn’t lose sleep because I honestly didn’t take it seriously but my horror to see it mounted.”

Ms. Moongwa said the Mulungushi International Conference Centre is an institution of 52 years, the truckload of peace deals orchestrated on that piece of ground by Dr Kaunda for Africa and deserves a lifetime commitment of preservation.

“The name is so sentimental that we have lost sight of where we place it. These are the moments that lead to solo protests with placards.”

“The speed of naming, folks forgot that the other two structures are nameless….We have the Old Wing (1972) that should be the Kenneth Kaunda Wing because of how much he did in that building. I would lobby all walls in the passages be lined with KK Memorabilia (others will argue he wasn’t alone) so we compromise with images from the era.”

She suggested, “The New Wing (2001) should be the FTJ Wing, he was at the helm of the Summit that brought us that facility, Millennium Village and a few other spots for the AU Summit.”

Ms. Moongwa said the New Facility should carry the Mulungushi International Conference Centre banner and be called the New Wing until the appropriate name is found.

“You see, beyond this AU Summit coming in July, that facility is a key component of Destination Lusaka and overall Destination Zambia.”

Surging food and energy prices may lead to “social unrest” in Africa, IMF warns

13

The the International Monetary Fund warned that surging food and energy prices stoked by the war in Ukraine may lead to “social unrest” in Africa.

The Fund says most countries south of the Sahara are already seeing a slowdown in economic growth from last year, and the impact will be amplified by the rising cost of cereals and fuel.

“The war in Ukraine has triggered a sharp increase in energy and food prices that could undermine food security in the region, raise poverty rates, worsen income inequality, and possibly lead to social unrest,” the Fund said in its annual Regional Outlook for Africa.

“The war compounds some of the region’s most pressing policy challenges, including the social and economic scarring effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, security risks in several countries, and the challenges posed by climate change.”

GDP growth in African countries in 2021 was 4.5 percent, an upward revision from the earlier estimation of 3.7 percent, but this is expected to slow to 3.8 percent over 2022, the IMF said.

The head of the IMF’s African department, Abebe Aemro Selassie, told AFP he was “very worried” by the twin impact of food and higher fuel costs — something that was particularly felt in the great majority of African countries that are not oil or gas exporters.

“This is a shock that hits in a laser light, directed at the poorest,” he said.

“Fuel price increases feed into transportation costs, and people providing goods and services will raise their prices because they are now facing higher input costs,” he said.

Food prices monitored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) surged 12.6 percent between February and March, reaching their highest levels since the index was launched in 1990, the UN’s agency said on April 8. The previous record high was set in 2011.

The IMF report placed the spotlight on the price of wheat.

Africa is dependent on imports for 85 percent of its wheat consumption, and this dependence is especially high in Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Mozambique.

In Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritius and Cape Verde, imported wheat, rice and corn, also called maize, account for more than 40 percent of calorie intake, the IMF said.

Food insecurity, it noted, is already high in the conflict-hit states of the Sahel, in Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

So-called food riots broke out in Africa, notably in Senegal, as well as in parts of Asia and the Caribbean in March 2008 when the last major food crisis erupted.

FAO chief Qu Dongyu, presenting his agency’s latest report, said there were parallels between then and now, with sharp rises in food, fuel, fertiliser and transport.

But he also underlined the aggravating effect today of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war.

Selassie sounded the alarm over the financial state of African countries in 2022 compared with the 2008 crisis.

“In sub-Saharan Africa in 2008-2009, there were many more governments that were in a better position fiscally to be able to absorb the shock,” he warned.

“Governments had flexibility to be able to make more intervention. This time with public debt as elevated as it is in many countries, that room for manoeuvre is much more diminished.

“The international community needs to step up to support countries as aggressively as possible,” he said.

Kabushi PF asks Lamba Chiefs to defend Lusambo

23

Opposition PF Kabushi Constituency Vice Chairman Febian Mwanza has appealed to traditional leaders on the Copperbelt to come out and defend Bowman Lusambo from what he called persecution.

Mr. Mwanza said now that it’s clear that the ongoing corruption investigations against Mr. Lusambo have been instigated by President Hakainde Hichilema, it is important that the Chiefs from Lamba Lamb come out and defend their subject.

He said it is regrettable that Lamba Chiefs have chosen to ignore the harassment that the UPND administration is inflicting on Mr. Lusambo, their subject.

He said the silence by the Lamba Chiefs is sending wrong signals that they have neglected their Son who is facing numerous corruption cases.

Mr. Mwanza said the traditional leaders have an obligation to protect the interest of their subjects against pure harassment purely based on political rivalry.

“We saw Luapula Chiefs speaking out loudly when late Dr Chiluba was being persecuted, they spoke out against the harassment of Dr Katebe Kalumba, Ronald Chitotela and very recently, Dr Chitalu Chilufya,” Mr Mwanza stated.

“We also how Chiefs from Eastern Province rose when Rupiah Banda was facing corruption cases and even South Chiefs spoke out each time Hakainde Hichilema in opposition was harassed,” he said.

“Why have the Lamba Chiefs opted to remain silent when one of their most prominent subjects is being mistreated by the UPND regime? They have to start speaking out because as we speak, the Chiefs don’t even know where his son and their grand children are staying now after they were kicked out of their family home.”

Mr. Mwanza stated that Mr. Lusambo enjoyed warm relations with all the Lamba Chiefs especially when he served as Copperbelt Minister.

“When he worked here in Ndola, he was always on hand to assist them. He sacrificed even his own time and financial resources to meet sown of their personal needs and if is unfair that they can now play a blind eye what he is going through.”

He added, “all those Chiefs have benefited from Mr. Lusambo’s generosity and it it’s only fair that they speak out and condemned the harassment he is being subjected to because what is going on now is not a fight against corruption but harassment of political rivals.”

“President Hichilema told the whole world that he doesn’t believe that Hon. Lusambo can build a house valued at US$150,000, so as far as the Head of State is concerned, Hon. Lusambo is guilty even before he faces trial, now this is political harassment and the Chiefs have to speak out and call it for what it is,” he said.

Can Napsa Stars Spoil Arrows ABSA Cup Ambitions?

0

Napsa Stars are itching for this Saturday’s ABSA Cup final against Red Arrows at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Napsa coach Perry Mutapa said the final against Arrows, who have just won the Super Division title, won’t be easy.

Napsa themselves have just secured promotion back to the Super Division after a one-season hiatus.

“First of all, congratulations to the Red Arrows. I think they put up a good fight. It is not easy to win the Premier League and I think most importantly they won the league in style. They played the best football in Zambia which is very encouraging seeing as coach from another team,” Mutapa said.

“Coming to the final, I think it won’t be easy and we just have to put up a good fight. We are the underdogs but it is a final we have to put up a good fight,” he said.

Mutapa downplayed his team’s competences in attack prior to the cup final.

“Of course their striking force is very good but also in the league we are coming from we had the best defence so we are going to see,” he said.

Mutapa said Arrows must put up a good fight against the Airmen.

Both Napsa and Arrows are aiming to win their second ABSA Cup titles.

Gary, The Economy and The Kachasu Fiasco

[Rule of the jungle, prejudice and Torture]

By Dr Canisius Banda

Gary NKOMBO is my FRIEND. I like his dress sense and love for fashion. As his Vice President in the UPND, there was a time I even passionately campaigned for him in his constituency in Mazabuka. I saw a promising FUTURE in him, such an articulate and passionate young Zambian.

But the Gary we are seeing today has MORPHED. I don’t know what he is high on or whether he is using drugs. He seems unhinged. He has become a monster, a dangerous creature that threatens our peace, one we must quickly cage. What Gary did in Garden Compound defies reason. It just isn’t done anywhere in the world. It is a no no. It was excessive, illegal, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, prejudicial, evil and criminal. It was unthinkable.

And Gary thinks he committed that travesty against that poor family alone. No, his injustice was to all citizens, the State and all humanity. It just isn’t done. This is why his apology to that family falls flat. No human being should be made to suffer such DEGRADING treatment and torture as Gary inflicted on those poor, hapless and vulnerable people.

Further, note that apologies are not the required, constitutional or legal provisions for settling crimes. Apologies just aren’t enough.

Hakainde, our Republican President, Gary’s supervisor, only a few days ago went to town and spent hours on end stating that his ‘new dawn’ government respects the RULE OF LAW. Gary, Hakainde, displayed the opposite. Gary broke the law. What Gary exhibited in Garden Compound, is NOT the rule of law, Mr President. That was the RULE OF GARY, barbaric, diabolical and downright evil.

Gary is wrong. Kachasu does NOT kill. His behaviour shows a degree of backwardness that should worry every development-minded Zambian.

Forcing citizens including their children to drink Kachasu against their will is plain torture. And Gary was on duty as Hakainde HICHILEMA’s minister, performing government business. Torturing citizens. Government business?

To promote entrepreneurship, recover the economy and prosper citizens, Hakainde HICHILEMA created a ministry for SMEs. On the other hand, Gary goes to town, with glee, as if demented, kicking to ground, the very paraphernalia, apparatus for economic growth, destroying businesses and wrecking lives, and whilst at it, he persecutes the proprietors.

Gary is wrong. Kachasu does NOT kill. His behaviour shows a degree of backwardness that should worry every development-minded Zambian. And it is this backwardness of thought that has kept Zambia underdeveloped for way too long. What kills is not the Kachasu but the manner of taking it. What Gary needs to know is that most breweries in the world, Europe, UK and Anerica, even close by in South Africa, all started as family businesses just like the ones in that hell-hole, that godforsaken, derelict compound called Garden.

It is NOT a Garden, my friends. More like a dump, urgently requiring, what Gary doesn’t know, a quick upgrade. Here is what Hakainde HICHILEMA must now do.

  1. Legalise Kachasu brewing
  2. Register all Kachasu brewers in Zambia
  3. License all Kachasu brewers in Zambia
  4. Give all Kachasu brewers in Zambia TPINs
  5. All Kachasu brewers in Zambia must undergo business capacity building by ZDA
  6. Link all Kachasu brewers to bigger brewers for further processing of the alcohol, to whom they must sell their commodity [quitecthe way the agricultural out-growers scheme works]
  7. The Councils must teach all Kachasu brewers hygiene and all requirements of public health
  8. Encourage the production of Masuku, Masau, Kwawasa, Banana, Lemon, Guava flavored brands of Kachasu, all local products.
  9. Facilitate the export of Kachasu to Europe, Asia and America.
  10. Form more cooperatives of brewers or to brew Kachasu
  11. Encourage the formation of the Kachasu Brewers Association of ZAMBIA [K-BAZ] to share best practices

I hope Ella’s MUBANGA is listening. Wake up, man! This is the Zambia Hakainde HICHILEMA wants, one which creates start-ups, regulates and thrives businesses. Citizen entrepreneurship is the future of Zambia.

And Kachasu is a multi-million dollar industry. We are aware that some foreign interests, competitors, might want Zambia’s Kachasu industry to die. We know. Yes, what Gary did was not only cruel and backward but it was illogical as well. It runs counter to the spirit of the UPND manifesto aimed at prospering small businesses. Gary, do the same for street vendors, as I propose.

Don’t kick them orctheir goods. If you continue, I, Canisius BANDA, with the people, will kick you away. You see, by their very nature, illicit breweries are illegal.

But the penalty for the guilty is NOT what Gary meted out. It is NOT forcing the brewers and their children, once caught at it, to drink the very same illicit brew, to force them to swallow very thing said to kill, as if attempting to murder them.

Gary, my friend, why? Hakainde is already having headaches and sleepless nights over the unbearable cost of living. And now you lump this social bomb on him! Feel for your boss, Gary. Already, he is a troubled man. But then this is what leadership is about.

A leader needs to know how to manage rebels, dissidents, bandits, law-breakers, prostitutes, thieves, witches, the Garys, ad infinitum, for every society, community, nation, comprises these. Every village has them. These are the citizens
Finally, when all is said, the buck stops with Hakainde HICHILEMA.

It was YOU, sir, that forced Kachasu down the throats of those children in Garden Compound. We, the citizens, are watching you, sir. Clearly, the Ministerial Code of Conduct now lies breached. And your leadership is in the dock.

Fix the country, please.
Do NOT fix the people.

For now, allow me to wipe the tears I have in my eyes. On this KAUNDA Day, I cry for Zambia.

A tipper truck operating at Black Mountain kills teenager chrome picker

12

A tipper truck operating at the Kitwe mineral slag dumb commonly known as Black Mountain has crushed a teenager chrome picker to death in Nkana West, Kitwe.

The 18 year old man died on the spot after a rear left tyre of a loaded Shacman Tipper Truck ran over him near near the Black Mountain on Thursday when he fell from the truck which was moving from the Black Mountain to one of the sites for chrome pickers.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Sharon Zulu has identified the deceased as Joshua Lombe who died on the spot after being ran over by a loaded Shacman Tipper Truck registration number BCD 5538 ZM which was being driven by Simwambi Samuel aged 39 of Ghandi Circle in Chambishi.

Ms Zulu narrated that the accident happened near Greek Olive in Nkana West residential area in Kitwe when Lombe allegedly tried to get on the moving truck so that he could pick up the chrome fell from the truck and was ran over by a rear left tyre of a loaded heavy truck.

“Yes, I can confirm that we had a fatal accident involving a Shacman Tipper Truck and a pedestrian. The accident happened when the truck was moving from the Black Mountain heading to 11th street. In the process, a pedestrian identified as Lombe Joshua who was trying to get on the truck fell down and was ran over by a rear left tyre of a loaded Shacman Tipper Truck,” Ms Zulu told the media.

The body of Lombe of house number B5-205 Wusakile Township in Kitwe has been deposited to Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) mortuary.

Meanwhile, quick action by police prevented his colleagues from rioting.

After news broke out that a chrome picker has died after he was ran over by a Truck near the Black Mountain, some his colleagues in Kandabwe area started looting vehicles which were using the Chibuluma and Kitwe-Kalulushi roads.

Unofficial reports from the Black Mountain indicate that a number of chrome pickers have been injured and admitted to Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) after being run over by Tipper trucks as they tried to jump on the moving trucks so that they pick up the chrome before it is offloaded to the four identified sites.

Almost three weeks ago, two pickers were injured and admitted to Kitwe Teaching Hospital (KTH) with injuries after they were hit by a tipper truck which was offloading material from the Black Mountain at one of four identified sites behind the Kitwe Show Grounds.

Authorities at the Black Mountain reportedly concealed the incidents, as a number of people express concern over poor or no safety standards regarding operations at the Black Mountain.

Poor safety, health and the over speeding of the trucks are some of the major concerns by stakeholders who include Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya.

HH wonders why Lusaka City Council officers have not been paid their salary arrears

13

President Hakainde Hichilema has wondered why Lusaka City Council officers have not been paid despite his government ensuring that the salary arrears for all local authorities of about 15 months are settled.

Speaking during a cleaning exercise to mark the first Kenneth Kaunda Day in honor of the late First Republican President, President Hichilema says his government has been very organized in addressing issues affecting councils.

President Hichilema says it is unfortunate that the council workers protested against the non-payment of their salaries but has called for patience saying the ministry of finance is aware and that he will ensure that is corrected.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema says the cholera situation in the country should be taken serious and stakeholders must ensure that it does not exceed the current number of infections recorded so far.

The head of state says the fight against Cholera should not be left to government alone hence all citizens should practice precautionary measures.

Nakacinda’s Arrest and President HH Blatant Hypocrisy

19

By Kapya Kaoma

Nakacinda’s arrest following his statement that “ubututu” (ignorance) is behind President Hakainde’s chaotic governance and politically motivated arrests is another example of despotic, appalling and the blatant hypocrisy of the New Dark administration. Aside from violating the freedom of expression that Zambians have enjoyed since 1991, the arrest is beyond human decency and only aimed at intimidating the opposition from standing up to HH. As a democratic nation, we must not watch as our freedoms are being taken away by the most insecure and narcissistic President. Our democracy is dying before our own eyes; it is time to say enough with this insanity!

Since when did saying ubututu (ignorant) become a crime? How many times did HH insult, and call Presidents Mwanawasa, Sata, Banda, and Lungu negative names? Who called Sata “Chimbwi has no Plan?” Who called Lungu “a clueless hyena?”

The heartless hypocrisy of HH is below the pale. If anything it says much about his immaturity. It was not long ago Chilufya Tayali was arrested. Didn’t HH claim to receive daily Intelligence briefings “before” President Lungu did in 2015? So why is it a crime when Chilufya Tayali says, “even soldiers are complaining”? If the Human Rights Commission has any iota of integrity, shouldn’t it be opposing such hypocritical arrests? Moreover, what does it mean when the President says, “Nakacinda must pay for his Crime?” unless he is directing such arrests? Despite what his worshipers believe, HH does not have a human heart. If he did, he wouldn’t be arresting people for the very things he said, and did when in opposition. He cannot continue praising his actions in opposition while arresting his opponents for saying the same things he said to other heads of government.

Nakachinda’s “tribal” generalization of President Hichilema’s “ubututu” is embarrassingly wrong. But there is something to say about HH narcissism. He only thinks about himself and himself alone. So how he became a billionaire by exploiting Zambians is only ethical to him and him alone. Once it is transferred to another person, it becomes a crime. This is his modus operandi or simply the HH doctrine. An insult becomes one when used by another person on him, but not by HH on others–remember “chik..la.” So it is for this reason that HH is going after everyone but himself. HH wants his name on everything for himself–thus he will do everything in his power to destroy his competitors. So if you want to be like him, too bad. You will never ever find a generous hyena.

Nakacinda’s argument is simple; if HH made billions at the time when the Zambian economy was at its worst, what makes him believe the PF politicians stole from Zambians? What Nakacinda does not understand is that it takes a thief to catch a thief. HH is the most experienced white collar thief in Zambian history; he knows how to steal from poor Zambians and has done so for over three decades. What Nakacinda fails to understand is that HH’s opportunities came when white collar thieves were not at the helm of power. So HH got away with it. PF officials can’t get away with it because HH knows all the tricks. Opportunism exists, but only under the HH doctrine. Otherwise his dogs will bite at will.

But the nightmare of political madness awaits. In darkness the Chibwi is too insane to tell the coming dawn. In Zambia, today’s President is tomorrow’s criminal. HH may boast at his Praise Conference, but there is no statute limitation on corruption and human rights abuses. One day, he will watch the very people he is now busy arresting chase his wild dogs around as Zambians insult him. If he thinks Nakacinda’s insults are bad, more are coming; ask Lungu. Zambians are like sex workers, one day the switch of power will be turned off. Ultimately, Unless he is fortunate enough to die in power, his name will be associated with shame. Just as he was locked up by his predecessors, his opponents will boast and sell their jackets they wore in prison with pride. We had KK, Chiluba, Banda, and now Lungu–they came in as saints but left as devils. The only saints are those who died in power. Even then, HH insulted them too.

I await the day.

Every citizen should take responsibility to clean the environment-HH

21

President Hakainde Hichilema says every citizen should take responsibility to clean the environment.

President Hichilema says cleaning the Central Business District (CBD) should not be left to the city council but everyone that trades in the area.

He says the Government is promoting a clean and green Zambia which results in a health and safe citizenry.

The head of state was speaking when he led a team of Government officials and defense chiefs in a cleaning exercise in Lusaka’s CBD.

HH with Local Government Minister Garry Nkombo

And President Hichilema has also appealed to Zambians to emulate the legacy of First President Kenneth Kaunda as they celebrate KK’s day that falls today.

He noted that he is a beneficiary of the free education initiative by the late Dr Kaunda, which is why it was one of the first policies he brought in when he assume office.

President Hichilema also added that he has the interest of street vendors at heart which is why his administration will never victimize them.

He also disclosed that his unpaid salary since assuming office will be channeled towards the underprivileged in society.

Local miners in Chifunabuli urged to get licences

1

Luapula Province Minister Derrick Chilundika has called for the enforcement of the Law in dealing with illegal mining activities in Chifunabuli District.

Mr Chilundika however, said the law should be applied so as not to injure the people whose only source of income could be in Mining.

The Minister advised that people need to follow the Law and conduct mining in a legal manner if the province is to benefit the mining sector.

“Government will not allow illegal mining, we need to apply the law and ensure that people especially locals register mines, because government wants to empower locals in different businesses including in mining, however, in doing so we should not injure our people, we should apply the law consciously,” the Minister said.

Mr Chilundika was responding to a concerns raised by Chifunabuli District Commissioner Adam Banda when he paid a courtesy call on him.

He emphasised that government wants local people to benefit from the natural resources in the country and thus encouraged local miners to legalize their activities.

“Government will not allow illegal mining, but even as government wants to legalise mining, we should ensure that we don’t injure our people who may only be depending on mining for their living, let us bring them together and encourage them to register their mines, by doing so we will be empowering the people and government will in turn benefit through revenue collections,” he said

The Minister has since called on licensed mining companies that are mining in the district to consider locals in their operations.

Earlier Chifunabuli District Commissioner Adam Banda told the Minister that the District is concerned with the increase in illegal mining activities in the district.

While in the district the Minister has also met Ward Development Committee Members for Chifunabuli Constituency to share on issues to do with the Implementation of the Constituency Development Fund

Kenneth Kaunda Day should not just be a mere formality holiday

7

Ndola clergy Fr. John Emmanuel Kapambwe of the Anglican Church has said Kenneth Kaunda Day should not just be a mere formality holiday but a moment for citizens to seriously learn from the iconic life of Zambia’s founding republic president.

28th April, 2022 has marked the inaugural KK’s Day which was declared by sixth republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu last year.

KK as he was fondly called served as the first president of Zambia from 1964 to 1991 and was at the forefront of the struggle for independence from British rule.

He died last June at the age of 97.

In an interview, Fr. Kapambwe of Masala Anglican Church in Ndola said people can pick many lessons from the life of Dr. Kaunda ranging from the promotion of peace to being a good family man.

“Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda was a great and passionate advocate of humanism. This means that; his leadership prioritised upholding the dignity of humanity. To protect the values, needs, interests, and freedom of humanity was the vision of his leadership. His vision of humanism on the centre manifested in many life lessons we can learn from his life,” Fr. Kapambwe said.

“The following are the lessons we can learn from his life; the first lesson is Promoter of Love and Peace: Dr. Kaunda’s favourite Scripture was Mark 12:31 ’Love your neighbor as yourself.’ His leadership was based on love for humanity as the most important thing. This is the reason on many occasions he could quote the said Scripture. Dr.Kaunda was a firm believer of Christian values in his leadership and always promoted peace and love. It is important for every citizen to pursue peace. I call upon the Citizens to learn to express their grievances in a peaceful manner. He continued preaching and promoting peace even after leaving office. As we celebrate the life of Dr. Kaunda let us avoid incidents like recent riots by the core boys in the intercity bus station in Lusaka. This also applies to all university students who like protesting by destroying property and other acts of violence can emulate the attitude of Dr. Kaunda,” he said.

“The second lesson is Example of Servanthood Leadership: Leadership is all about willingness to serve others. This is what Dr Kaunda believed in. Dr Kaunda during his reign was able to ensure that people were served in a fair and acceptable manner. Leaders today and the people serving in public offices and many others can emulate the selfless service Dr. Kaunda portrayed. The third lesson is Example Integrity: The leadership of Dr. Kaunda was characterised by Integrity. Integrity is the aspect of doing things in an honest way. As a result of this, Dr. Kaunda believed in governing the affairs of the country in a transparent manner devoid of misdeeds such as criminal activities. Integrity is the aspect that is lacking in both Church and Circular leaders. We have to embrace an attitude of integrity like our founding father.”

“The fourth lesson is Unity: Dr. Kaunda was a firm believer in unity and very passionate about it. He was a unifying factor who brought all the 73 tribes together under the popular One Zambia One Nation motto. He denounced tribalism, hate speech and political violence among other vices. This was a good thing leaders and every Zambian can embrace especially in this time when we are struggling with issues of tribalism and tribal remarks by some leaders, like what we experienced during the previous campaigns of the tripartite elections,” Fr. Kapambwe continued.

“The fifth lesson is Freedom Promoter: Dr. Kaunda was not only concerned for the Freedom of Zambia but the Liberation of Africa as well: Dr. Kaunda assisted to liberate some countries within the continent of Africa. He played a very significant role towards attainment of independence by countries such as Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and Mozambique among others. Dr. Kaunda also accommodated people who fled from war-torn countries. These people had even an opportunity to pursue formal education in Zambia. For instance Mr. Emerson Munangagwa, the current President of Zimbabwe pursued all his education in Zambia and he later trained as a lawyer at the University of Zambia. Let us pursue freedom for every individual. As we celebrate this day I call upon all those involved in the abductions of the young ladies working in mobile booths to stop with immediate effect. As a nation let us all fight together against this vice posing a danger to the girl child as well as violation of the rights of movement and assembly,” he added.

Fr. Kapambwe concluded:”The sixth lesson is commitment to family:* Dr. Kaunda was a committed family man and faithful husband. This is the virtue that is lacking in many young people today. In this time when divorce and GBV cases are rampant we can learn from Dr. Kaunda who was able to faithfully uphold the sacrament of Holy Matrimony until death. This Kaunda’s Day Holiday must not just be a celebration for formality. Instead we have to take seriously the lessons that we learn from his life. And this great honour we can give to Dr. Kaunda as we celebrate his life and legacy. God bless Zambia.”

Shepolopolo Await Fridays 2022 Womens AFCON Draw

Shepolopolo Zambia coach Bruce Mwape says he is not expecting any surprises in Friday evenings 2022 Women’s AFCON tournament draws.

Twelve teams will go into the draws that will be made in Rabat at 22h30 Zambian time for the WAFCON that Morocco is going to host from July 2-23.

Shepolopolo and nine other teams including South Africa are unseeded.

Three seeded teams will lead the groups and they are Africa’s top ranked side and WAFCON champions Nigeria who are 41st in the World and Cameroon who are second and sit at number 53.

Morocco, who are 78th in the World, are also been seeded as hosts thus relegating Africa’s third best team South Africa who are at number 56 on the FIFA Rankings into the unseeded pots and will now wait to know in which group they will be drawn.

“There are no easy teams at AFCON because all the teams that qualified so we expect the draws to be fair,” Mwape said.

“They are seeded and unseeded teams so we expect everything to be OK with regards the draws.”

Meanwhile, Shepolopolo will be in action just hours before the draws against fellow 2022 WAFCON finalists Botswana at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The match will be one of two friendlies against Botswana and the final game will be played on May 2 at Nkoloma.

Shepolopolo are heading for their second consecutive WAFCON after making a group stage exit at Ghana 2018.

Morocco will mark Zambia’s third-ever tournament appearance.

DRC President to Expected in Zambia for official visit

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation wishes to inform the Nation that Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo will undertake an Official Visit to the Republic of Zambia on Friday 29th April, 2022.

During the Visit, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia and President Tshisekedi are scheduled to preside over the official signing of a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This landmark Cooperation Agreement stems from the multi-stakeholder DRC-Africa Business Forum hosted by President Tshisekedi from 24th to 25th November 2021, where President Hichilema delivered a keynote address.

The two leaders acknowledged the need to identify opportunities and facilitate investments to increase Africa’s share of the battery, electric vehicles and renewable energy value chain.

President Hichilema and President Tshisekedi, therefore, agreed to launch a joint Zambia-DRC Battery Precursor Initiative, whose vision is to create a competitive Electric Vehicle Battery Value Chain aimed toward sustainable development and inclusive growth, through the production of battery precursors.

The Zambia-DRC Initiative is in line with the country’s development aspirations to bring about a more diversified and industrialised economy which will contribute toward job creation and the improvement of the Zambian people’s livelihoods, among others.

The Republic of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo share strong historical bilateral ties and a common border and the two countries actively cooperate in social, political, and economic areas, within the framework of the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation.

President Hichilema has underscored the need for Zambia to enhance cooperation with the Democratic Republic of Congo for mutual benefit and it is hoped that this visit by President Tshisekedi will further strengthen the existing bilateral ties between the two countries.

The UPND Government will therefore continue to work with the Democratic Republic of Congo at regional, continental and international levels through the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the African Union, Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). The strong multilateral cooperation will be based on shared values and principles.

His Excellency President Tshisekedi is expected to depart Luaska after his engagements.

This is according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Stanley K. Kakubo, M.P

Napsa Stars Chairman Demands Team Wins 2022 ABSA Cup

Napsa Stars board chairperson John Chundu has issued a rallying call to the promoted FAZ Super League side to win the 2022 ABSA Cup this Saturday.

Napsa, who have just secured top-flight promotion after a season down in the FAZ National Division 1, face 2021/2022 FAZ Super League champions Red Arrows in the final on April 30 at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

“Now that we have that weight off our shoulders, it is time for us to concentrate on bagging the ABSA Cup,” Chundu said in his Chairmans column on Napsa Stars’ official website.

“This weekend we face Red Arrows, a team that has been excellent in the Super League. And this is no doubt why they have won the 2021/22 the league title.

“Allow me to congratulate Zambia Air Force-sponsored side for this great achievement.

“However, this should not intimidate us as NAPSA Stars. We have also been great in our Division One league and reaching this far in the cup competition is no minor feat.

“It is for this reason that I urge each and every one in the team to fight and get us the ABSA Cup this weekend as we face Arrows at Nkoloma Stadium.

“The stadium set for us for this final will not favor us, but let us not dwell on that. It is a local derby and we need to show up.

“We have been underdogs throughout this competition and we must continue to put in the extra work to continue shocking everyone.”

Both sides are former winners with Napsa lifting it in 2012 when they were promoted after a 21 absence from the FAZ Super League.

Napsa later finished runners-up in 2017 after losing 2-1 to Zanaco.

Meanwhile, Arrows replaced Napsa as champions in 2013 but have only just returned to the competition for the first time since then in this year’s edition.

Gary Nkombo should step Down, says PF as the urge Human Rights Commission to go beyond Condemnation

The opposition Patriotic Front (PF) has demanded that Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Gary Nkombo should step down as a Minister on his own accord.

In a statement made available to the media, PF acting Secretary-General Nickson Chilangwa said that if Mr Kombo does not step down on his own, the party will be left with no choice but to escalate the matter further, without spelling out the specifics.

Mr Chilangwa said that his party refused to accept what it described as a half-hearted apology that Gary Nkombo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development has rendered, adding that Mr Kombo was forced to apologise out of public outrage and not because he is remorseful for what he described as his sadistic behaviour against the poor woman and her children.

Mr Chilangwa also said that the Minister did is criminal and is punishable by law, saying that according to Articles 15 and 18 of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia, subjecting a person to inhumane or degrading treatment is a criminal offence.

Mr Chilangwa said that the Section 231 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia states that: “Any person who unlawfully, and with intent to injure or annoy another, causes any poison or noxious thing to be administered to, or taken by any person, and thereby endangers his life, or does him some grievous harm, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for a period not exceeding fourteen years”

Mr Chilangwa said that, as a Minister, it is his duty and responsibility of Mr Nkombo to protect the poor and the weak, especially women and children against any form of abuse or ill-treatment.

Mr Chilangwa further said that, instead of destroying the source of livelihood for our poor mothers brewing Kachasu, the UPND Government should engage them and offer alternative sources of income-generating activities.

Mr Chalangwa also took a swipe at the Human Rights Commission for merely condemning the vile behaviour of Mr Nkombo, saying that falls short of the expectations of the Zambian people.

Mr Chilangwa urged the Commission to not just end at issuing statements of condemnation; they must take appropriate legal action against the minister to make him an example to others that such wanton abuse of human rights shall not be condoned.
