Zambia calls for the normalization of trade between Luapula Province and Congo DRC

5

Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa says the issue of smuggling between Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC) will be a thing of the past once trade is normalized.

Mr. Chilangwa says the time has come for Zambians to be allowed to trade freely with their DRC counterparts.

He added that the only thing that required to be done is to put in place structures that will allow for proper trade to be taking place between these two countries.

Speaking when the Ministry of Commerce and Trade Permanent Secretary Mulenga Mushuma called on him at his office, Mr Chilangwa said people in Luapula Province should be free to sell two or three bags of maize or mealie meal to their counterparts in DRC without labeling them as smugglers.

” There is a huge market in DRC and as Zambia and Luapula Province in particular, we should take advantage of that,” says the Minister.

Mr. Chilangwa says institutions such as Zambia Revenue Authority and Immigration can be brought on board to ensure that things are done in a right way even as people trade.

He revealed that Luapula Province shares a very long boarder with DRC adding that it was possible that certain places can be identified where trade can be taking place.

“The more we continue to prevent people from trading the more we will be promoting smuggling hence it is important that trade is normalized so that the issue of smuggling can be dealt with once and for all,” notes Mr. Chilangwa.

And Ministry of Commerce and Trade Permanent Secretary Mulenga Mushuma says his ministry is impressed with the way the Luapula Provincial Administration is taking things were commerce and trade is concerned.

The Permanent Secretary noted that Luapula has demonstrated what Provinces can do in attracting investments in their respective regions which can in turn improve the economic activities in the country.

” We as a ministry we shall continue to work closely with all the provinces in the country to see to it that they open their respective Provinces to investments, ” says Mr. Mulenga.

The PS further disclosed that the Ministry of Commerce and Trade was working at speeding up different trade investments which are taking place in Luapula Province.

Mr. Mushuma has since pledged his ministry full support to Luapula Province as it continues on its path of economic development through various investments.

Dr. Miti said Dr. Msiska had a rare talent and acumen of intellectuals with a rare skill of public administration. He added that Dr. Msiska was a manager, an administrator, and a medical doctor with distinguished service.

The Secretary to the Cabinet said this when he led a delegation of senior government officials in visiting the funeral house of the late Dr Msiska in Lusaka today.

Labour Minister Challenges Labour officers to be proactive in providing solutions to labour issues raised by workers

8

Labour and Social Security Minister, Joyce Simukoko has advised Labour officers and district administrations to be proactive in providing solutions to labour issues raised by workers within their jurisdictions.

Mrs Simukoko says labour officers should promptly resolve labour matters reported to them before seeking her office to directly intervene.

Mrs Simukoko said this during her fact finding mission at Huan-Cheng Manganese Refinery Company in Kapiri Mposhi district after the workers at the company complained of non-attendance to their plight even after reporting to labour officers at district and provincial level.

Speaking on behalf of other workers, Cephas Simbeye told the Minister that the workers had no proper protective clothing and were subjected to wages as low as K30 per day which is below the minimum wage.

Mr Simbeye disclosed that employees had no signed contracts and were not entitled to day-offs.

“We have reported these issues to the labour office and the DC, but nothing has changed so we are happy that you have come,” Mr Simbeye said.

And Mrs Simukoko took Central Province Labour Officer, Jenipher Shamabanse and District Commissioner, Smart Mwila to task for not promptly attending to labour issues reported to them by the workers at the company.

Mrs Simukoko said labour officers at provincial and district levels have been empowered to address numerous labour related issues at workplaces and should not always rush to her office.

“It is your responsibility and that is why, you are there. Before, you come to the minister do something. You should have local solutions to these problems because you are empowered,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Simukoko has challenged employees to acquaint themselves with the employment code and the country’s labour laws before agreeing to be engaged to render their services.

She noted that most of the labour issues being experienced in the country were emanating from lack of understanding of labour laws by employees.

Mrs Simukoko further appealed to trade unions to educate employees on the country’s labour laws.

“Take interest and know what you are getting into before agreeing to be engaged. Trade unions also should come in and help to educate workers on labour laws,” Ms. Simukoko said.

Mrs Simukoko was accompanied by Central Province Minister, Sidney Mushanga, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Mukamasole Kasanda, District Commissioner Smart Mwila and other senior government officials.

HH Only Option for Zambia

Choolwe Chibomba Aspiring candidate for Mapatizya Constituency.

Hakainde Hichilema is the best option for Zambia going forward, says aspiring UPND candidate for Mapatizya constituency, Choolwe Chibomba. Speaking to Lusaka Times exclusively, Mr. Chibomba said that if you look at all the current Presidential candidates contesting, HH is the best qualified for the job.

“Zambia currently has a leadership crisis,” Chibomba said. “The ruling party has had ten years to show us what they are capable of, and they have failed us. It is time for change, and the answer to our problems right now is HH and the UPND.”

Chibomba said HH genuinely has a heart for the people, and is our only option if we want to restore order in our beloved country. He believes HH’s character and commitment to the people of Zambia are what will deliver him the Presidency come August 12, 2021.” Zambia needs a strong, resilient, and accountable leader – these are all qualities that Mr. Hichilema has demonstrated, and prove why he should be our next President.”

As the Election Day draws nearer, Chibomba says we must ask ourselves whether the last decade has truly reflected what we want our country to stand for and how we want to be represented. He says as Zambians, we have a number of questions to ask ourselves as we head to the polls, such as where the country is going and where we want it to end up. He also says Zambians must consider the kind of legacy we want to leave behind, and how we want the generations of Zambians in the future to remember us.

“We have seen what happens when leaders who are not compassionate are in power,” Chibomba said. “They abuse their privilege, and all of us collectively remain behind. Being a politician has become a gateway to personal enrichment, and is no longer about serving the millions of Zambians across the country. These are not the values our country was built on at Independence.”

Chibomba says voting the UPND into power is the “reset button” Zambia needs to get back on track. “Hakainde Hichilema is our only option if we want to see a better Zambia for all of us, not just those connected to the ruling party. He is the solution to both the leadership and economic crises our country faces.”

“On August 12, we have our chance to fix things, and go back to the country where we all got a chance to prosper. Let us make sure we do the right thing.”

Choolwe Chibomba is an aspiring candidate for the Parliamentary seat in Mapatizya constituency.
