Kanidu Points Out Nkana’s Continental Malaise

3

Coach Kelvin Kaindu has blamed Nkana’s dismissal in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage on inexperience.

Kalampa were on Wednesday thumped 2-0 by Moroccan side Raja Casablanca in their second CAF Confederation Cup Group D match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

This loss came a week after Nkana were beaten 3-0 by Egyptian club Pyramids in the opening Group D match in Cairo.

Nkana remain rooted at the foot of Group D with no points.

In a post-match media conference, Kaindu said the Nkana squad lacks experience and depth.

“We are lacking experience for us to play in the Confederation Cup. If you look at the squad that we have, I think first of all we don’t have depth. I think we have been using the same players that are playing both in the Confederation Cup and the local league,” Kaindu said.

“If you saw both goals that we gave away we were in possession maybe just the poor technique we failed to manage and control the ball. And Raja with the experience that they have they managed to get the two goals,” he said.

Kaindu said North African teams have maintained their superiority over Zambian clubs because they are well organised on and off the pitch.

Meanwhile, Pyramids stayed top of Group D after beating Namungo of Tanzania 2-0 in the other group match.

Suspend Comprehensive Sexuality Education until stakeholders reached consensus

6

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia(EFZ) has called for the suspension of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) until stakeholders reached consesus on the subject.

EFZ Acting Executive Director, Bishop Andrew Mwenda expressed dismay that a directive by the Vice President Hon. Inonge Wina to constitute a technical working committee has not been made or respected.

The Church has insisted that CSE must be withdrawn completely and in its place a family-centred sexuality education approach that secures Zambia’s posterity and respects tradition and culture must be quickly drafted.

He said it was clear that various parts of the programme that were deemed harmful were being implemented.
He said schools were teaching CSE and the public were being bombarded with radio adverts aggressively promoting the use of contraceptives by adolescents, without encouraging abstinence.

EFZ said that while it is observed that in the early process of piloting the CSE programme in Zambia, direct references to sexual orientations such as homosexuality were resisted by participants and therefore removed, EFZ maintains that the programme remained harmful as it promoted a sexual liberal ideology and EFZ was concerned about the subtle and pervasive integration of this into other subject matter.

Bishop Mwenda said CSE should be withdrawn immediately from schools until consesus was reached.

UPND will take care of all those who worked faithfully worked with Sata and have been discarded by PF

UPND Deputy Secretary General for Politics Patrick Mucheleka says Minister of Defence , Davies Chama’s remarks on Former Republican Vice President Dr Guy Scott clearly reveals his ignorance on the Country’s history.

Speaking during the press briefing held at the Party Secretariat this morning, Mr Mucheleka advised Mr Chama to read the country’s political history in order for him to fully appreciate the enormous contributions that Dr Scott has made to the country’s democratic growth.

Mr Mucheleka charges that the disparaging remarks against former Republican Vice President and newly appointed UPND Chief Consultant, Dr Scott by Mr Chama was also a clear indication that the Defence Minister has no understanding of the PF’s foundation.

He noted that history was rife with Dr Scott’s numerous contributions to Zambia’s politics, saying the MMD’s first Mpika Central MP had an inseparable connection with the PF founding Father, late Michael Chilufya Sata.

“You can’t claim to love late Sata without loving Guy Scott. Guy Scott and Sata are synonymous. Guy Scott gave direction in 2011, 2015 and 2016 and this time around, he has given direction and this direction is ‘Zambia, Forward!’,” he said.

He wondered how Mr Chama and the PF expected Dr Scott to take leave from politics and rest when the ruling party has ravaged the country’s economy.

“How does Mr Chama expect Dr Scott to rest when the PF has mismanaged this country? Look at Simon Zukas! In his 90s, he’s still chairman of OCIDA. How can Mr Zukas keep quiet when this country has been destroyed by these ba Mwankoles?” asked Mr Mucheleka.

“It is clear that all those that fought with Mr Sata faithfully have all been discarded and UPND will take care of all those who contributed to the development of this Country”, said Mr Mucheleka.

He assured the youths that hope and help was on the way and that President Hichilema was more than ready to deliver the country from suffering and misery.

“To the youths, don’t despair because Bally, our Moses, is coming to give you quality education and health care. Those with skills will venture into entrepreneurship while graduates will have jobs after their training,” he said.

Speaking during media briefing this morning, Mr. Kambwili unreservedly apologised to the Head of State and his family for remarks made in the past.

“The issue I am going to tackle this morning is one that Reverand (Serge K Changa) has been talking to me about and wanted to see this issue and other issues surrounding this are resolved amicably…., one of the people that I should also recognise, pertaining to this issue is the late Father Chilinda, may his soul rest in peace, what I am going to say today is what Fr. Chilinda wanted to see,” he said.

“Let me start by saying is that I am a Christian like many of the Zambians who believe in truthful, reconciliation and forgiveness, during my self imposed political hibernation I have reflected on a number of issues that I thought I should address today,” he added.

Mr. Kambwili specifically singled out a press briefing he held where he questioned the association of President Edgar Lungu and Mr Valden Findlay.

“As many of you maybe aware, our offices as politicians are viewed as voices of the people and a lot of information verified and unverified is passed on to us. In about August, September 2019 my office was availed with some complaints and at that time I thought it is only right that I bring this information to the public. I have however realized that I should have cared enough to engage the people involved or even take time to verify the raw information that came to my attention in the line of my political duty as an opposition leader,” he stated.

“Having said this, I want to unreservedly apologise to the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu for the misunderstanding that he is a drug dealer as insinuated by some sectiond of the media then. “My prayer is that His Excellency Mr Edgar Changwa Lungu and Mr Valden Findlay find it in their hearts to forgive me. I am however reminded by the Zambian singer Ephraim’s song ‘ndi muntufye, limo limo naine ndanaka’ to error is human and to forgive is divine…… I tender this apology, without any prejudice or malice” He said.

Street lighting project in Livingstone stalls

6

Livingstone City Council (LCC), says it is struggling to raise K600 thousand for the completion of the street light project which has stalled since 2013.

The Council initiated the street light project when Zambia and Zimbabwe co-hosted the 20th Session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), General Assembly.

LCC Public Relations Manager, Melvin Mukela said the street light project was abandoned by the contractor, Ketrom Enterprises, after failure to meet its obligations.

Speaking during a briefing in Livingstone today, Mr. Mukela explained that the contractor failed to install 10 electricity poles, thirteen fittings, three core cable, two distribution boxes and 2,700 metres of armoured cable.

He said the project would have been completed if the contractor had installed the stated items.

“This state of affairs was disturbing, so we engaged the contractor and resolved to terminate the contract in 2019, when we established that he would not manage to complete the project,” Mr. Mukela said.

Mr. Mukela said a budget of K600, 000 was then made in 2020, for the council to take over and complete the project.

He however disclosed that the council has had a reduced financial base due to the COVID-19 pandemic making it a challenge to complete the street lighting project.

“We should have started working on the street lights but our financial base has really gone down due to the effects of COVID-19. This is because most of the hotels and lodges have closed down and are failing to pay property rates to the council, hence, we are limping and we are failing to raise the money to complete the project,” he said.

“In spite of the circumstances, we shall work hard as the council to find resources to finance the project. We wish to assure members of the public in Freedom Ward that it is in our plan to complete the project as soon as possible,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from the contractor, Ketrom Enterprises failed, as the number listed on their social media platform is for a former employee who opted to remain anonymous and claimed the enterprise had been closed, due to financial problems.

ZANIS reports that the street light project on Botswana Road was initially funded by government and was set to be completed ahead of the 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly which took place in Livingstone and Victoria Falls Town, in August 2013.

The Botswana Road spans a stretch of 6.3 kilometres and links Livingstone/Kazungula Road to Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport.

He said the PF has faced challenges before but succeeded and has continued to be popular and making Zambia a better place through unprecedented development which is incomparable to any other political party in the country’s history.

Rotary-led Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia awarded US$6 million to reduce burden of malaria in heavily affected districts

5

To help end a leading cause of illness and death in the southern African country of Zambia, a Rotary club-led initiative aims to save and improve lives by empowering community health workers to test, diagnose and treat malaria.

Malaria, a preventable disease caused by a parasite spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes, disproportionately affects children under the age of five and pregnant women in rural populations.

To help end malaria in Zambia, The Rotary Foundation, World Vision USA and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will each contribute $2 million for the Rotary-led Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia program. This $6 million program will add 2,500 community health workers to the national health system in Zambia, allowing for effective malaria diagnosis and treatment for more than 1.3 million people in ten of the most highly affected districts in Central and Muchinga provinces.

“By empowering community health workers, more people in areas with little to no access to health care will now be reached by trusted members of their communities,” said Bill Feldt, member of the Rotary Club of Federal Way in Washington, USA, who spearheaded the program. “This proven health care delivery model is effective and financially sustainable, and will bring lasting protection by reducing and eliminating this disease at the local level.”

Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia takes Rotary members’ commitment to eliminate malaria to the next level by building a longer-term, multi-stakeholder partnership on the ground in Zambia with the National Malaria Elimination Centre, provincial health leadership, PATH MACEPA and World Vision Zambia. Martha Lungu, executive director for Malaria Partners Zambia, an affiliate of Malaria Partners International, and member of the Rotary Club of Ndola (Zambia) said, “Every day I witness firsthand the effects of malaria. This program demonstrates that Rotary members are true partners in our communities and are focused on supporting community health workers to help loosen the grip malaria has on the Zambian people.”

Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia is the first awardee for Rotary’s Programs of Scale grant. In an annual competitive grant process, The Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s philanthropic arm, will award $2 million to an evidence-based program that aligns with one of Rotary’s causes and has the capability for scaling-up to help more people. The programs are sponsored by Rotary members in collaboration with local communities and partner organizations.

Rotary and Partner Quotes
“Rotary’s Programs of Scale is encouraging our members to think big and to work with other organizations to find comprehensive solutions to large-scale issues,” said K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, Trustee Chair of The Rotary Foundation. “The power of Rotary is greatly magnified when we partner with like-minded organizations. As we’ve learned from our global effort to eradicate polio, our impact on communities is further augmented when compatible partners contribute their own specialized skills, talents and finances to support our efforts.”

“Rotary members bring unparalleled energy and dedication to global health challenges. Their efforts have brought polio eradication within reach, and I am confident they will do the same in the fight against malaria,” said Philip Welkhoff, Director of the Malaria Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “This project complements and builds upon the leadership of the Government of Zambia in working to eliminate malaria from the country. We are thrilled to expand on our longstanding partnerships with Rotary and World Vision to advance progress in hard-to-reach communities and to realize the goal of ending malaria for good.”

“We are pleased to partner with both The Rotary Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on this important work to help end malaria in Zambia,” said Edgar Sandoval Sr., president and CEO of World Vision U.S. “When we bring impact-focused organizations together, we can do more to help the world’s most vulnerable reach their potential.”

Beating of Zambia Police Officers by Suspected UPND cadres saddens SACCORD

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) is disheartened and regrets the acts of violence witnessed on commemorating Youth Day between suspected cadres belonging to the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) and officers from the Zambia Police Service (ZPS).

In a statement, SACCORD, Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says it is extremely concerned with what appears to be an increasing culture of disrespect and intolerance on the mandates of stakeholders in the governance process of the country.

“One may not always agree with the ZPS, however, it is disturbing to see citizens or cadres beat up ZPS officers and thereby send a wrong message to the public that when in disagreement with law enforcement officers it is okay to exchange punches,” he said.

He added that the usage of violence through physical force for anyone stakeholder to get what they want does not help Zambia’s democracy or peace in any way as the results tend to be injury and harm to people.

“This is evidenced by the injury to both the police officers and suspected UPND cadres which results in trauma on their part.”

He has since appealed to political party leaders in the country to prevail over their cadres to desist from engaging in acts of violence and to ensure that they respect the mandate of all stakeholders in the governance process of the country.

“We hope that the disturbing scenes witnessed on the Copperbelt will not repeat themselves as the nation builds momentum towards the 2021 general elections. We also appeal to the ZPS and opposition political parties to dialogue and address any misunderstandings peacefully as conflicts can become violent conflicts when there are not enough platforms for dialogue and disagreement.”
